Shew will then be able to purchase a copy of his birth certificate which will tell her the names of his parents and where and when he was born, plus his father's occupation etc. Copies of the GRO indexes on microfilm or microfiche, will be found in many reference libraries and some County Recrod Offices throughout the country. Beyond that it may be a case of getting his parents' marriage certificate in the same way. Your first aim should be to get back to 1901, the year of the latest available census. If you know that he would have been baptised in a particular church then you may be able to make use of its registers, which may well have been deposited in Durham County Record Office, especially if the family were Church of England.
