Is there anyone who could look up my gg grandparents on the 1871 census? I have them on the 1881 census and again in 1876 when their daughter was born but otherwise I cannot find them anywhere! (Have tried 1891 and 1901 - their daughter was married 1895, and father listed as alive, in Middlesbrough by then) 1871 could be just before they were married. I am assuming they were married in Gateshead (Only marriage cert I can find has different ages but otherwise tallies - adam 22, living in Oakwellgate, Gateshead, father James Stewart, labourer. Mary Jane is 18, at Backfield Farm, Park Lane, G'hd, father James? Clark, a mason). I cannot trace these parents either. Their info on the 1881 census is: Adam STEWART Born Ireland, age 27 , occ. labourer chemical Mary Jane, born Carlisle, Cumberland, age 24, dressmaker children James, born Gateshead, age 7 Robert, Gateshead, age 6 Esther, gateshead, age 4 George, Hebburn, age 2 Adam, Gateshead, 10m and they were at 42 Peareth St, Gateshead From Esther's birth certificate; Mary Jane's maiden name was CLARK. They were at 80 Devonshire Street, Gateshead then. I have hit a brick wall here, they just seem to disappear. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it! Sue Tomkins Hampshire
Hi Sue, Sorry I can't help with the 1871 census but have had a look around on the 1901 - you might already have found these and rejected them. There is an Adam Stewartt (2 ts) on the 1901, aged 48, born Ireland living in Middlesbrough - only problem is he is a dock labourer and looking at others in the same household, there would appear to be no Mary. There is an Alice aged 44 and various children aged 11, 9, 6 and 2. So possibly he remarried or this is not the correct entry. Have looked at FreeBMD and there was a death of a Mary Jane Stewart aged 25 in the December quarter of 1881. However there could have been many Mary Jane Stewarts around that area. There was also a marriage of an Adam Stewart in Gateshead reg Dec 1884 and amongst the names there was an Alice Closk. Also people who might fit on the 1901 in different households: Robert Stewart, 26, Gateshead Durham, Yorkshire Middlesbrough, General Labourer George Stewart 20 Durham Gateshead Durham Heworth Railway Gateman - age 2 years out from 1881 James Stewart 25 Durham Gateshead On Town London Woolwich Gunner Soldier - age 2 years out from 1881 I presume you have Esther and family on the 1901. There was an Adam Stewart aged 1 whose death was registered in Gateshead in Sep 1881 according to FreeBMD. Whether or not the above mentioned people are yours or not, I don't know and it is very easy to make assumptions. But you might see something there which helps or you might be able to knock them out of the equation.
