Hello list, I am new to researching and have been told I may gain some help here. I would appreciate any assistance you may have to help me. I am looking for my ggg grandparents. They were very young when they married, William (16) Eleanor (12)The last confirmed document I have found them in was from the 1881 census. Showing there address as: 44 Whessoe Lane, Darlington. A great helper, Brian Harrison helped me track them down. Then in 1901 census living at : 50 Whessoe Lane, this was known as the Rise Carr Hotel. Here they meet up with a family member by the name of Colby Harrison, his profession was hotel proprietor. Each of these addresses is used during this time with the movement of my family. Colby again was found on an old directory in 1915 living at the , White Rose Villa, Durham Rd. my guess, a retirement home.. I am having difficulty going any further back with out knowing Eleanor's maiden name. But, I think I may have a clue as to what it may have been. They adopted a son, his name Arthur Craggs, born in 1876 and shown on the 1881 census living with them. I think this was Eleanor's nephew, her sister or brothers child. Just a thought, but it may hold the key I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated. William and Eleanor Harrison: William born 1845 Middlesbro, York England (Blacksmith, shopkeeper) Eleanor born 1849, Durham, Waskerly England: she was very young with her first child, 10 yrs. Very sad I think, but this child was my gg grandmother. She was born before marriage. Children: They have more I suspect, Arthur Craggs- adopted son: Born 1876, Darlington, Durham England Margeret,( Mary) born 1859, Yorks, England She was my gg grandmother, married John Thomas Newton in around 1889, older when married than her mother, 30's. Thank you, Lori
Hi Lori Put this together earlier but went off to see Camelot at the local summer stage before it got sent. I think you have now received this from others but have a couple of notes. Anyway, and I'm no expert, but transcriptions as well as the original enumerators pages often can be suspect. Mispellings can make life difficult if you don't know the geography. I wouln't have known about the extra "s" in Walkerly in the 1881 transcription. In 1891 I would guess, for what it's worth, that Henry and William are brothers and the enumerator just goofed when the relationship was written down. Take care and have a great day.
