Here I do think that has happened, and I would guess that what was intended was possibly "Whelp Letch". That is probably just the name of one individual farm: it is not a village or anywhere larger than that. It sounds vaguely familiar to me, though I cannot place it exactly! "Letch" is a local name for a stream - usually a slow-running one through low-lying, boggy, ground.
