In a message dated 8/7/2004 15:30:28 PM GMT Daylight Time, mackjack@ozemail.com.au writes: An article in The Times (Sat 10 Jan 1931) which stated that Jane Hannah BENFOLD had been charged with the murder of her husband Charles on Dec 5 1930 at Southmoor and whilst on remand had given birth to a still-born child whilst in Durham Prison. She had been arrested on New Year's Day, a few hours after the death of her mother. Would anyone know if there is a local newspaper that may have covered this story and if they have archives? Kathryn: You could try the Durham County Advertiser or the Durham Chronicle, if they were still in publication at the time. Durham County Record Office has microfilm copies of both. Alternatively, and also in Durham Record Office, there are microfilm copies of the local (Stanley) newspaper - I forget its name but it should be in their on-line catalogue. For a general overview of which newspapers there were at different times you could try the on-line catalogue of the British Library Newspaper section at Colindale, North London. They will have copies of all newspapers published in the 1930s.
