Jim: George Oakley Nixon, baptised at Ryton on 3 June 1781, was the son of Cuthbert Nixon (1750-1819) and his wife Joanna Craggs (c1742-1802), who married at Ryton by Licence on 17 June 1769. I have a pedigree which takes the family back for a further four generations and which includes links to the family of Sir W H Stephenson of Throckley, DCL, Chairman of the Throckley Coal Co and three times Lord Mayor of Newcastle. There are also links to the founders of the S Wales steam coal industry and (possibly) to an Agent to Crowley's Factory at Winlaton. There are further links to an extensive and ancient family of Newtons, yeomen famers etc in the Ryton district since Tudor times, some of whom played host to John Wesley when he visited that district on his travels.
