Jo, perhaps I should point out that Moat Side Lane - at least today - is a dark and narrow alleyway, part covered over, which runs round the back of the buildings which front onto the Marketplace/Saddler St/Silver St. It is certainly not a street as we would think about it, and I imagine its course and layout are unchanged from the medieval plan. In Durham such alleyways are known as "vennels".
