Ann: The NDFHS index to all burials in Co Durham 1813-1839 (there is a similar one for Northumberland) includes that of William Stewart of Gateshead, buried at Gateshead (St Mary's) on 24 November 1818, aged 32. There is no suitable entry for Jane. If this is your William then Jane would have been left as a fairly young widow and, having at least one young child, would have been keen to find a new husband to look after her and her family. If she did marry again, we have no guarantee that she would have remained in Gateshead for that: she could have gone anywhere and the big city of Newcastle beckoned from just across the Tyne. However, it does seem plausible that she was the Janet Stuart who married Henry Forbes at Gateshead on 3 June 1822 (information from the NDFHS index to all marriages in Co Durham 1813-37: there is a similar index for Northumberland). If you were to view the originals of the parish registers, or a microfilm copy of them, then you would be able to see Janet's signature (if she was literate) in 1815 and in 1822 and that might help you decide whether it really was the same person. For the re-marriage of a widow (she might be so described in the entry for her second marriage, a good bonus) there is a chance that it was by Licence, another source of useful background. William's death might be commemorated by a gravestone (MI) in St Mary's churchyard but there were so many burials there that only a tiny proportion were so recorded, and they were usually of the more wealthy families. It might even be worthwhile seeking a Will for William. Note that Jane called herself Janet, the Scottish form of the name, at her second marriage. She also used Stuart (the version of Stewart used by Scottish Royalty) and married a Forbes (another good old Scottish surname), so it might not be such a wild guess to suspect that she may have been of Scottish extraction! The indexes I have mentioned are extremely useful and are available for purchase on microfiche or on CD. They are not on the 1841, nor is their son James. I have found James in 1851 in London with his own family but no parents around with him. I think both William & Jane must have died before the 1841 census and I am trying to locate their burial places. Any suggestions most welcome Thanks Ann
