Hi I wonder if someone could help me.I seem to be a bit confused.On the 1851 census I have a WILLIAM MOODY D.O.B. ABT 1818 in Ebchester married to a MARY A D.O.B. ABT 1820 Children JOHN D.O.B. ABT 1846 SARAH D.O.B. ABT 1850 The 1851 census is very hard to read. NO RECORD OF THEM ON THE 1861 CENSUS On the 1871 census they turn up again but this time the MARY A he was married to was born ABT1840 and he has different children.Am I being really silly and are they are not the same people. Jan, Look at Census 1861 (3734-45-33). 40 yr old unmarried ( a weaver on 51 and 71, but lab here) with 19 yr old Mary Ann house servant. As Ian suggests, first Mary A might have died ( candidate @ June Qtr, Hexham 1852) Michael Dixon

Difficult to know with the information you have, Janet. Possibly you are looking at different Williams, or perhaps his wife died & he married another with the same (rather common) Christian name. Since the 1851 and 1871 censuses are 20 years apart, it is quite reasonable for the children of 1851 to have left home - or died with the relatively high mortality rates of the mid 19th c. You could order the (several) candidate marriage certificates to see what fits, or you could take a chance on the baptism and burial records - and marriage if you are even more lucky - of the local parish church. Of course, they could have married elsewhere, been non-conformist or whatever. A determined look for William (perhaps without Mary A) in 1861 would be worthwhile. Finally, of course, they could be the same William and Mary A, and at least one census could be wrong in some details. You don't say where the Mary A(s) were born? Do they tie up?
