The family could have originally used some other name for him and then changed their mind later and brought him up as John. Have you checked all possible registrations and births that could have been of children of this couple. If so, did you find a son, not John, who was born etc at about the right time but who is not heard of afterwards? That could be the child who "became" John. Geoff Nicholson
