I would like to buy a Birth Registration Certificate for William DIXON born in County Durham in 1840. I see four possibilities in FreeBMD but I do not know which District, Vol., or Page will match the one I want as requested in the application form for the GRO. However I do know that his parents were Joseph and Mary DIXON. Is there a way to specify only the information I know to order the correct one? Thank you. Dave.

At the bottom of the form under reference checking you can state the parent information and you will only be charged about 2 or 3 GBP. I believe it says the price on the form. But have you found William Dixon in later censuses? If you know the parish of birth, you can figure out the correct registration district. Hi Dave I've checked the Durham Records and only one of theWilliam Dixons is currently on line. His birth is registered in the Durham Northern area. This is the contact details: Durham Northern The Registrar 7 Thorneyholme Terrace Stanley Co Durham DH9 0BJ UK Telephone: 01207 235849 (In UK), +44 1207 235849 (Outside UK) The specific reference number for the certificate is DNCH2-61 Durham Northern (1840). You may be lucky, if you call and ask the if they would confirm the parents are Joseph and Mary Dixon, so that you can see if it's your man. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't. You just need to hope they are not too busy. Personally I would wait until, say Tuesday or Wednesday, which tend to be quieter with fewer weddings etc going on.
