Hi Janet I think you mean 1871 Its unlikely to have been what the enumerator heard, more likely what he could not read on the householders form (sadly all long gone) William is onboard the "Otter" in 1861 have you found Maria in 1861 ? In 1871 the place of birth for William is Amsterdam (no Country), for Maria I would say it says "Hipingen" (again no Country) Have you found any of the childrens births?
