    3. Hi List, I have been looking at my husband's COOPER family, who lived at South Shields from c 1874. I have traced most of the family through to 1911. However, two girls, Sarah b Hythe, Kent, 1872, and Emma, b 1875, in South Shields, disappear. I was told that they went as missionaries to China. I have no idea who might have sent them, where or why they went, what happened to them, and how I might find out more. Tall order, I fear, but I won't find out unless I ask! Ann -

    3. Hi Ann, What a super interesting post! I know of one large Chinese Mission society, the China Inland Mission was founded in 1865, and led by Methodist Minister Hudson Taylor. The CIM sent hundreds of missionaries from England to China. Many of them were single women. I looked on ancestry.co.uk to see if I could find your sisters on any passenger ship records, but couldn't. Where did they live on the last census you had them on? I would look up whatever city or district they were in, and see what Churches and missionary societies were in the area. Maybe they went and heard a visiting minister speak on the subject of missions in China, and became interested. Have you looked for them on genesreunited? It's possible that Sarah and Emma returned to England after being away in China for a period of time. Maybe you can find archives of the various Chinese mission societies, and schools operated by them. There is the Mundus Gateway which is a web-based guide to more than four hundred collections of overseas missionary materials held in the United Kingdom. http://www.mundus.ac.uk/ Stan Mapstone -----Original Message----- From: Ann <annathamble@aol.com> To: eng-durham@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, 20 Nov 2009 21:20 Subject: Re: [ENG-DURHAM] Missionaries to China Hi List, I have been looking at my husband's COOPER family, who lived at South Shields rom c 1874. have traced most of the family through to 1911.
