    3. Hi Nivard The members of my family were in the blacksmith trade, centred around Winlaton Mill in early times - and this is information that I was given several years ago. The VINTONs were one of the families who went to the Derwent valley at quite an early time, to participate in the iron industry. - possibly one of the Shotley Bridge Sword-making families. If not then they would have been associated with the early iron foundry at Blackhall Mill or else the one at Derwent Cote. In any case the original VINTONs were of German extraction and many of them ended up working for Crowleys at Winlaton, Winlaton Mill and Swalwell. The earliest record I have for my ancestral line is of John VINTON who married An FORSTER at Blackhall on 1 June 1703 [from the Ryton Holy Cross registers] Heather Nivard Ovington wrote: > Hi Heather > > Seeing your mention of VINTON I note the similarity to my own name, OVINGTON > > Although they may have derived from different sources (mine is obvious) I am > not so sure with VINTON > > Any idea where yours came from? > > A contraction perhaps? 3. Hi Heather I was interested to read about your Vinton family in the Winlaton/Swalwell region. My family (Hunters) also lived in that area from the 1600's or earlier and like yours worked for the Crowleys as anchorsmiths. Later they moved to South Shields and then Sunderland carrying on their trade in the shipyards. Fascinating to think that our ancestors may well have worked together at some time and could well have known each other. Derek
