I`m picking up the family history tools after a lean spell and getting ready for our annual trip to the North East. So might be calling on your help again from time to time. Starting with- Could someone help with the reading of a occupation in the census. 1871 RG10 /4882 page 14, this taken from a saved image. I`m looking at my gr grandfather William CARTER & Eliza. I`ve previously read the occupation as Labourer in Iron Wrks. Which is possible. But have never been entirely happy as there seems to be something added on after Iron, if the word is Iron, which is stumping me. Any help appreciated. George Carter in Whaley Bridge
>Can you give me some census references for your family - and >an approximate age for John VINTON >Did you order his marriage certificate? - this would give his father's >name and occupation, and would be well worth getting. Scans sent off list. I am a bit surprised myself that I don't have a copy of the marriage certificate - but these are actually rather distant relatives of mine which must account for it. Joseph Thomas ELRINGTON who married John VINTON's daughter Mary Ann Farraday VINTON, was first cousin to Mary Jane ELRINGTON, my Gt Grandmother. I followed up John VINTON's story because as a sea captain there are many details available about incidents in his eventful life - which included a shipwreck in the channel and fatal shipboard fire. Hi Heather I was interested to read about your Vinton family in the Winlaton/Swalwell region. My family (Hunters) also lived in that area from the 1600's or earlier and like yours worked for the Crowleys as anchorsmiths. Later they moved to South Shields and then Sunderland carrying on their trade in the shipyards. Fascinating to think that our ancestors may well have worked together at some time and could well have known each other. Derek
Hi Heather, We exchanged messages about this family when you returned from your hols. in April last year. I am afraid I can add little from what I knew then; my John VINTON's mother was Elizabeth ROBSON, born Whitburn about 1804 according to the 1851 census. Elizabeth's father (living with her in 1851) is John ROBSON, born Sunderland about 1770. John ROBSON (presumably the same one, but could be a brother or something instead) was also living with Elizabeth in 1841 and is then identified as an Ag Lab, age unknown. I don't have John VINTON's father identified, I'm afraid. Does that help connect us at all? I was wondering if someone could do a paper look-up for George Fenwick Jackson, trial Durham Assize on 27th July 1815, General Gaol delivery found guilty for larceny 7yrs. Thanking you Helen from a very cold NSW
Thanks for yours Heather It doesn't sound like there is a likely connection but will keep it on file just in case Mine were more in the trade of digging stuff out of the ground <g> Although my g.g.g.grandfather was a cooper by trade (even he ended up an Alum miner) Will keep your information for ron :-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard > > The members of my family were in the blacksmith trade, centred around > Winlaton Mill in early times - and this is information that I was given > several years ago. > > The VINTONs were one of the families who went to the Derwent > valley at quite an early time, to participate in the iron industry. > - possibly one of the Shotley Bridge Sword-making > families. Ian Can you give me some census references for your family - and an approximate age for John VINTON Did you order his marriage certificate? - this would give his father's name and occupation, and would be well worth getting. Hi Heather Seeing your mention of VINTON I note the similarity to my own name, OVINGTON Although they may have derived from different sources (mine is obvious) I am not so sure with VINTON Any idea where yours came from? A contraction perhaps? I can say that in my youth I have often been shouted from a distance which sounded very similar to VINTON Just a thought :-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Ian > > I saw your posting and just wanted to mention my own interest in the > VINTON family. > This is not a common name in the area - and probably most of the VINTONs > are related. > I am descended from John VINTON born 1802 in Gateshead who married 30 > October 1831 in Heworth to Sarah MANNERS. > John's father was William VINTON and his mother Elizabeth FENWICK > His grandparents were Samuel VINTON and Jane THOMPSON > > I have other information, that I am happy to share. > > If you see any connection to your John VINTON, I'd love to hear from you > > I'd also like to share any VINTON information that you may have - or > that anyone else may have. > > Best Wishes > > Heather
Hi Nivard The members of my family were in the blacksmith trade, centred around Winlaton Mill in early times - and this is information that I was given several years ago. The VINTONs were one of the families who went to the Derwent valley at quite an early time, to participate in the iron industry. - possibly one of the Shotley Bridge Sword-making families. If not then they would have been associated with the early iron foundry at Blackhall Mill or else the one at Derwent Cote. In any case the original VINTONs were of German extraction and many of them ended up working for Crowleys at Winlaton, Winlaton Mill and Swalwell. The earliest record I have for my ancestral line is of John VINTON who married An FORSTER at Blackhall on 1 June 1703 [from the Ryton Holy Cross registers] Heather Nivard Ovington wrote: > Hi Heather > > Seeing your mention of VINTON I note the similarity to my own name, OVINGTON > > Although they may have derived from different sources (mine is obvious) I am > not so sure with VINTON > > Any idea where yours came from? > > A contraction perhaps? Hi Liz, It's not much, but I have Elizabeth Farraday of South Shields who married John Vinton, June qtr 1856, S Shields vol 10a p633. John was a sea captain who led an eventful life and died tragically. One of their children, Mary Ann Farraday Vinton, married into my Elrington family. If you can fill in any more information about Elizabeth and her family, I'd be delighted. I have quite a lot of background on John. Hi Yvonne Have you looked at the Diocese of Durham Bishop's Transcripts? http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/#r=1;p=allCollections Stan Mapstone
Hello, Is anyone visiting the archives where the parish registers for Stockton are kept and willing to look up a baptism OR can someone give me the name of a local researcher. Using the age recorded in censuses and in the marriage cert show the baptism year to be 1823 or 1821. I would therefore need just 4 or 5 years checking. Kind regards Yvonne.
Thanks for the replies ! Im trying to locate a Robert allen born 1832 stockton on tees.He appears on 1841 census in the high street Stockton with mother jane and father Robert allen booth born c 1796 durham. I cant seem to locate Robert allen junior on 1851 census at all.Hisfather Robert allen Senior died 1848 . Any help in locating him appreciated. sue
Probably Gt. Smeaton and East Cowton two and a half miles apart and in North Yorkshire, not Co. Durham. Check them on Genuki. Lancelot Howard Barron LBarron Associates U.K. Middlesbrough U.K. (Don't take life so seriously. It isn't permanent.)
Hi , Im looking for an Alice Allen .Its the allens im tracing in particular the Robert allen who appears on census with her. Alice was born c 1815 and married a francis hunter in 1841. I have found her on 1841 census living in Stockton on tees high street all it says is not born in county and a tick for born in Scotland inland or foreign parts. Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 317; Book: 24; Civil Parish: Stockton Upon Tees; County: Durham; Enumeration District: 3; Folio: 9; Page: 12; Line: 8; GSU roll: 241357. In 1851 she is still in Stockton at the high street with husband francis .It has Robert Allen as son in law age 15 also it has alice as being born Smeaton in Durham. Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2383; Folio: 538; Page: 27; GSU roll: 87061. In 1861 she is still in Stockton with francis and Robert s allen as son in law but alice is now down as being born east cowes Yorkshire ? Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3693; Folio: 46; Page: 27; GSU roll: 543173. Im trying to locate her on IGI to find where she is born also what relation and how does the Robert S Allen fit in . Any ideas ? sue
Sue Son in law was used in the olden days for what we now call step son From what you have described, it would seem that Alice ALLEN had a child Robert ALLEN in about 1835. Then she married Francis HUNTER in 1841. The later censuses give the relationship of Robert to Francis - step son - or son in law as it was known, indicating that Francis was probably not the father of the child. Hope this helps As for where she was born, sorry I can't help. The IGI only shows one baptism of a Alice ALLEN in the area in that time period - in Middlesbrough in 1817. However it is a patron submission, not an extraction from church records, so would have to be verified Heather Sue Horn wrote: > Hi , > > Im looking for an Alice Allen .Its the allens im tracing in particular the > Robert allen who appears on census with her. > > Alice was born c 1815 and married a francis hunter in 1841. > > I have found her on 1841 census living in Stockton on tees high street all > it says is not born in county and a tick for born in Scotland inland or > foreign parts. > > Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 317; Book: 24; Civil Parish: Stockton > Upon Tees; County: Durham; Enumeration District: 3; Folio: 9; Page: 12; > Line: 8; GSU roll: 241357. > > In 1851 she is still in Stockton at the high street with husband francis .It > has Robert Allen as son in law age 15 also it has alice as being born > Smeaton in Durham. > > Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2383; Folio: 538; Page: 27; GSU roll: > 87061. > > In 1861 she is still in Stockton with francis and Robert s allen as son in > law but alice is now down as being born east cowes Yorkshire ? > > Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3693; Folio: 46; Page: 27; GSU roll: > 543173. > > >
Hello Cath I have a number of Hallidays from Sunderland and Durham, but no Hollidays - although the spelling seems to have been interchangeable. Do you have any earlier Holliday/Hallidays before Thomas J so I can see if there is a connection?
