Hello Mel I am interested in an Arthur BOWMAN - born in about 1832. Married in Feb 1860 in Gateshead to Sarah VINTON He was aged 28 occupation labourer father Henry BOWMAN farmer. By the time of the 1861 census Sarah is in the workhouse in Gateshead with a young child, Ann. RG 3801 99 3 22/23 I have been unable to find any trace of Arthur BOWMAN, birth or death or census. In Mar 1870 Sarah, a widow, remarried to a widower Joseph HARDY [and later became my great grandmother]. Joseph's father was David HARDY, a hairdresser. I'd be interested in exchanging notes with anyone researching these name in order to sort out this family. My two questions are what happened to Arthur BOWMAN and who was Joseph's first wife. George I obtained Coroners inquests for North Yorkshire from North Yorkshire County Record office at Northallerton so I assume (?) that those for Durham would be available in the equivalent repository for County Durham. I believe Coroners' papers are normally closed for 75 years so you should be able to obtain the one you require. I found them fascinating! PS. If anyone has found a Sayer in their tree recently do get in touch, and we can share information. If the information could have survived and where it might be kept if the inquest concerned someone from Gateshead?
The Durham County Record Office has a few records relating to inquests. A full list of existing records is given in "Coroners' Records in England & Wales" published by the Federation of Family History Societies. Newspapers are your best bet. Hello, I am researching the Cates family, which could be spelled Cates, Cate, or Kates. Family legend states that 3 brothers emigrated from Northern England to Norfolk, Virginia. The earliest, that we can trace is through a Joseph Cate born in 1708. Joseph Cate died 17 June 1766 in South Carolina. I have gone through numerous records and found nothing. Can anyone help. Thank you, John Cates

Perhaps you could try the telephone directory, then call or write to all/any Stock mentioned therein: and perhaps also the genes reunited website, which I'm sure you can find if you google. Hi List peoples, I am new to these List but have been a subscriber for donkey's years to others. But I am not sure which List my request will cover! I have just found out that a person with the surname STOCK moved from Tamworth to South Shields in the 1901 census. An Edwin J STOCK was born in Bolehall, Tamworth in about 1875. He married Mary Eleanor ASHWOOD in the first quarter of 1899, the second quarter of the same year Victor J was born, both events happened in Tamworth. In the 1901 census for South Shields, up pops Edwin, Mary and young Victor. My queries are: One, are there any STOCK still about in and around the area of South Shields and, two, are any of these STOCKs descended from this one STOCK. I am trying to bring together a descending family tree for a cousin of these STOCKs here in Tamworth, Staffordshire. I look forward to any advice or thoughts anyone may have. Many thanks and regards, Michael McAllister
Am wondering is there a book written on Hartlepool? and would I be able to order it from here in Canada? My Family interests are Taylor & Chamberlan Ellen
Can anyone help with a burial record for my gt gt grandfather Robert PRESTON, who died at Langley Moor, 28 April 1874? He was involved in coke making and later as a coke agent based in Brandon Colliery and other nearby collieries. I am guessing he may have been buried at Brancepeth or at a cemetery near Langley/Brandon. Can anyone offer a lookup for this period, or else suggest his likely place of rest? Many thanks, Ian
Dear Listers, To introduce myself I am Anthony Laing and I am new to this list. I would appreciate any help with the following marriage. The marriage was between William Laing and Margaret Chisham on the 20th April 1747 at St. Margarets Church, Tanfield, County Durham. I would very much appreciate (if anyone has access to this marriage record) any details referring to William or Margaret's place of birth or any reference to their fathers and any information about Williams occupation or profession. With thanks and kind regards, Anthony Laing

You can therefore expect no extra information about the people concerned than their names, which youj already have. There being no regulations, parish clerks could add more detail if they wished, but in 99% or more of the cases they did not. Most marriages were after the calling of Banns and although many genealogical text-books will tell you thatg Banns books can give extra information, I have to say that in my experience that is most unlikely - and separate Banns Books are not usually found from so early a date anyway. Your main hope of discovering more about the circumstances of each person at the time of the wedding will therefore have to lie in the slight possibility that the wedding was by Licence. If it was, then you should be able to access the Bond and Allegation necessary for the Licence to be issued. It would be kept today with the Diocesan Records in Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections. Indexes to them, including all the information likely to be useful, are published on fiche and CD by the NDFHS (see _www.ndfhs.org.uk_ (http://www.ndfhs.org.uk) ). However, if the wedding was by licence then that would usually (but not always!) be noted in the marriage register. Geoff Nicholson
