    3. Hi George It looks like Pipewellgate Velcher or Velches Buildings to me The name is transcribed as CURR on Ancestry (which is what it looks like frankly) I have entered an alternative name for each so in due course they will be picked up in a search as CARR Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Does anyone know anything about the above building. The Spelling might be slightly off. Taken from the 1861 census of Gateshead. RG9/3800 Folio: 69 Page 49. It sounds like a rather grand building but I expect it would have been a ramshackle, run down thing where the sanitation wasn`t the best. My ancestor Cuthbert Carr was here in 1861, probably in a room. He may have died here in 1868 of .Chronic Diarrhoea The death certificate just says, Pipewell Gate. Thanks for any help. 3. I think it's Veitch too. I remember having seen people with that surname in the area. My ancestors were in Pipewellgate, too. They lived in Scott's Cottages, which of course were owned by the Scott family. The Veitch family must have had that building originally. 1. [ENG-DURHAM] O'Grady/McCluskey Thornley, Bishop Auckland Berry Edge?
    2. Debbie Moors
    3. Hello -- I think I may have posted this several years ago, but thought I¹d re-post in case anyone out there has connections... Patrick O¹Grady (b. Ireland (Possibly Co. Kerry) about 1820 m. Elizabeth (Unknown) b. abt. 1821. They moved from Ireland to Durham CO. sometime after 1849. Patrick (and later, his sons) worked in the coal mines. Known children: Mary O¹Grady b. 1844 (Ireland) Michael Joseph O¹Grady b. 9/29/1849 Co. Kerry, d. 9/20/1924, McDonald, PA, USA Thomas O¹Grady b. abt 1851 Martin O¹Grady b. abt 1855 John O¹Grady b. abt. 1859 Patrick O¹Grady b. abt. 1861 An Elizabeth O¹Grady Cudahy of Chicago, Ill, USA, is listed as a sister in Michael¹s obituary, but I¹m not certain if she and Mary are the same person, or if there was another child born after 1861. According to 1861 England/Wales census, Patrick, Elizabeth, Mary, Michael, Thomas, James, Martin, John and Patrick -- along with Andrew Brady and Patrick Murray, both 25 -- resided Conside & Knitsley, Durham, England. Sometime before 1870, Patrick and Elizabeth emigrated from England to Pennsylvania, USA. Only Thomas, Martin, and John are listed in US census in 1870, so I¹m uncertain whether Patrick remained in England or died before the census. Mary may have remained in Durham. Michael Joseph O¹Grady m. Margaret McClusky, daughter of Patrick and (possibly) Ellen (Mc)Clusky. Michael and Margaret were married in Bishop Auckland. They emigrated to the US around 1869 with their young daughter, Maria Ann (Mary). Michael and Margaret had 14 children. I have no information about the Clusky/McClusky family, other than the info that Margaret was born in Ireland and moved to Durham with her family. There is some indication they lived in Thornley, (family verbal history) and ³Berry Edge.² Michael also worked in the mines, as did Patrick McClusky. My grandmother said that her grandparents (Michael and Margaret) sometimes returned to England to visit family. I would love to pick up the thread connecting through descendents of the family that remained in England. Debbie Moors

    3. Hi All, I am trying to research this WILKIN family. I think I found him on the 1911 census in Houghton le Spring occupation miner hewer. Robert's sister Mary WILKIN was my grandmother. Robert WILKIN's family are shown as wife Annie, daughters Sarah and Violet. 3. Hi George I understand that the Norway rootsweb mailing list (which is conducted in English) is most helpful for this sort of thing - see http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ Scandanavian church books are very detailed so you will get a lot of information - there are likely to be several sponsors/godparents listed who are likely to be younger male and female relatives. 1. [ENG-DURHAM] William BUTLER - Chester le Street?
    2. Jane McManus
    3. Hello List I have returned to the Durham list after recently discovering on the 1911 census returns that my grandfather, William BUTLER was born in Co Durham in about 1877 (his age is recorded as 34). As for where in the county, the original entry is very hard to decipher but a cousin has told me he believes it was Chester le Street. The only other clue I have is that on his marriage certificate his father is named as Henry BUTLER. I have tried to find him on all the usual sources on the internet, including earlier censuses, but with no success. I wonder if there is someone on the list who is able access local records who could have a look for him? I would be grateful for any help - he's been very elusive! Thanks in advance Jane

    3. George,   you may be lucky enough to find details in one of the local newspapers of the time.   I found an inquest report in the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle January 1866 after my g grandfather was the first Cornish miner killed in a mining accident in Cramlington.  It's always worth asking which newspapers are available.  I went to Newcastle Libray to look at the newspapers.   Daphne.

    3. Thanks for this Stan. There was a manslaughter charge and trial that followed and I`m told that there could be a record of the trial at the P.R.O. I don`t really fance going down there just for this, but could have puesuaded myself to a trip to Durham. Thanks for the interest and the help.
