    3. Wondering if anyone on the list that is in North America has ever obtained a copy of an English will/probate documents. I have been searching for a while and cannot find a way to obtain them online. Seems the only way is to snail mail the requesy to York and guess at the amount in pounds. I have the death dates for the three people and know where they died just don't know if they actually had left a will or died intestate. Any thoughts on the subject gratefully received Arlene Victoria BC

    3. Hello list Thanks to Durham Records Online I have finally found a lost ancestor. His baptism is recorded in 1839 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Barnard Castle. It says that he is of the Union Poor House. Where would I find any information on this Poor House, and where was it located.? Many thanks Vicki

    2. The Teesdale Union Workhouse was situated in Barnard Castle. See A-Z of workhouses ar _www.workhouses.org.uk_ (http://www.workhouses.org.uk) . ( But no records of folk.) In the main, the normal BMD and Census and Church records contained details of workhouse inmates. (The appropriate County Record Offices hold a variety of records on people, e.g. date od admission, reason, etc) Michael

    3. Hi Helen, I think you mean Pemberton Street, which ran from Hendon Road to Moor Street, then continued as Woodbine Street which is still there. If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and put the post code SR12NL in search it will show the location of Woodbine Street, Pemberton Street was the part nearest Hendon Road which is shown on the earlier maps. Adi: Buy it by all means but don't expect it to be within the "usual" range of new book prices. I don't have the details to hand but I do know that unless you are an institution of some kind you could well find the cost prohibitive. Of course, if you are a member of the NDFHS you could request a reading from the copy in their Bolbec Hall library, via the "research request" form issued occasionally with the NDFHS Journal. Apart from that monumental list of Tyne registered shipping, Dick Keyes also produced a much slimmer - and cheaper - volume "Sailing Ships of the Aln and Coquet". As many of those had Tyne connections, through being sold on to Tyne owners, for instance, it could be useful and certainly anyone would find it of immense interest as it includes a lot of local historical background. Crew are not mentioned, though some of the Captains are. It is mainly about the owners and the career of the ship, including its final fate. Neil Richardson's microfiche of (a) owners and (b) Masters of ships registered on the Tyne and in other local ports such as Blyth and Sunderland has no background, just the lists, but might also be a cheaper alternative to Dick Keyes' book. 3. Hello Michael,   Thank you for giving me a reply. Yes, there is a WILLIAM & MARY in Richard Keyes book. My William Bittleson (or Bittleston, Bittlestone, Biddlestone etc.) was master of it in 1825 at which time also my Snowdon and Pippet relatives were part owners. I'm not 100% certain that that WILLIAM & MARY is the same one (rueful smile - too many of my shipowning ancestors had ships with very common names - makes me really appreciate the odd BURNHOPESIDE and HENZELL'S PATENT), but it's the right name in the right era. That's why I'm trying to track down names of prisoners of war. But, in 1807, he was a very junior seaman, and as you say, not many of those are named.   Myself, I have never seen a copy of that book, but a kind member of The Mariner's List sent me that information a few years ago. I'm in Canada and according to [worldcat.org], there are no copies in libraries closer to me than Newcastle. 3. Hello List, I have just recieved the 1851 census for my Ancestor Robert Johnson and his wife Sarah. At that stage they had 3 children William aged 7 Hannah aged 2 and Marj or Mary aged 4mnths, but by the time of the 1861 census the two youngest had dissapeared, so I guess they must have died. They were liveinf at Elan? Lane cottages St. Andrew Auckland. Could someone kindly look these up for me Thanking you Sue in N.Z

    2. Sue, I think street is Eldon Lane. The BMD Registration District for this area was Auckland. The FreeBMD site shows death registrations at Auckland RD for a Hannah Johnson( in June Quarter of 1851- just after 1851 census was taken on 30th March)... and several for a Mary Johnson ( including one for same June Qtr 1851. On the death indexes are on line- just showing bare details- only way to be sure is to buy the certificate with full details. I can see the family in Shildon on 1861 census ( page ref 4928-40-7). Do you have them on later censuses or did they leave England ? Michael

    3. Hello List,   First the b/g, then the question.   From: Caledonian Mercury (Edinburgh, Scotland), Monday, June 22, 1807; Issue 13334   "In the night, between the 29th and 30th of last month, three English ships were stranded near Calais, namely, the WILLIAM & MARY, Capt. Box, the YORK, Capt. Landers, and the corvette JACKALL, commanded by Lieut. Charles Stewart, of the royal navy. The crews were all saved, and made prisoners of war. - Moniteur of June 5."   I believe that I had an ancestor aboard the WILLIAM & MARY and am anxious to discover if any lists of names of those made prisoner-of-war exists. So far, I have searched the web unsuccessfully.   Q? Can anyone tell me if Le Moniteur is available online or on microfilm or in book form anywhere for June 1807? I know from experience that not all archives list their holdings online, so my appeal is to the collective knowledge of the members of this list.   Any help appreciated.   Regards, Adi __________________________________________________________________ Be smarter than spam. 3. Hi Helen I am not sure whether you have already gone down the paths I outline below, or whether you have obtained the info from (for example) George's Australian marriage certificate? Anyway, just in case and apologies if this is old hat, on www.freebmd.org there is the following birth: Births Jun 1899 George Longstaff Auckland vol 10a page 242 FreeBMD is a volunteer project to transcribe the civil registration indexes for England and Wales. If you click on the district name [in this case Auckland] on FreeBMD you will get more information about where it is etc. You can use the references on FreeBMD to purchase certificates here http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ There are a number of possibilities for the deaths of Robert Cox Waugh & Mary Hannah Waugh, as they may well be just listed as Robert & Mary, no middle names given, as you will see if you have a look yourself. Have you tracked them forward to see where they might be living later in life? Please note that FreeBMD is a work in progress and that the project has only recently got up to the 1930s so there will be gaps - click on the info tab to see coverage. You can page through the images for years not yet transcribed on the FreeBMD site. If you live near a reasonably sized city in Australia, there will be a library with the BMD indexes for England and Wales on fiche. By the way, their death certificates will not give the names of their parents. Their marriage certificate will give you the names and occupations of their respective fathers - here is the reference from FreeBMD: Marriages Sep 1896 LONGSTAFF Mary Hannah Auckland volume 10a page 355 Waugh Robert Cox Auckland 10a 355 1901 Census Durham RG13/4680 Folio 60 page 30 Civil parish Stockley Village Page Bank Ecclesiastical parish - Willington 157 Old Row 2 rooms Robert C Waugh, Head, 28, Coal Miner Hewer [I think it says Hewer but the word is partly obscured by later writing] born Durham, South Hetton Mary H. wife 26 born DUR Hylton George L. son age 1 born DUR Spennymoor See www.genuki.org.uk for information about these places - here is a direct link to the page for Brancepeth if it works http://www.joinermarriageindex.com/pjoiner/genuki/DUR/Brancepeth/index.html The 1911 census is available on a pay per view basis here http://www.1911census.co.uk/ - the index is free. If you find your family it will give more information about other children. This seems to be the family (this info is from the index - to get the rest of the entry you will need to buy credits on the 1911 census site). Robert Cox Waugh born 1873 district - Durham , Co. You can find out by looking through church records - see www.familysearch.org, click on library tab, then library catalogue. This will take you through to what records are available on film to order at your nearest LDS family history centre for a nominal fee. The library tab will also take you to a list of family history centres in your region. Don't forget that they may not have used the Church of England so have a look at non- conformist records also eg the Methodists.
