Hi All, (I hope this isn't too large of a message) I posted the following heads of households a couple of years ago to this list. I have ADDED a few more. My life is such that I can continue to help with these entries for now. I still have more entries, (if the list would like me to continue) from the 1891 Census, for Bishopwearmouth, & Henden Durham. If you are interested in any of the surnames (listed below), & would like the entire entry, let me know privately at: laurieloodles@hotmail.com. INCLUDE THE NUMBER that is listed at the beginning of your surname, & the piece number listed at the beginning of each section of names. ! I have to have this number to find the entry for you. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR QUERIES TO 2 PER PERSON! I DON'T have the entire Census, so PLEASE DON'T ask for names I haven't listed. If the entry I send you is your family, I have them burned to a disk, so I have the images available to send to you if you would like. Dear Mr Mapstone, A special thank to you for your prompt answer to my inquiry. Very professional information and suggestions. I am not enough familiar with the process but suppose that originally a birth was recorded in a BOOK by a registrar. On the bottom of Ernest's birth certificate from Registration District Auckland it says: <"Adopted" Walter Foster, Superintendent Registrar> As the adoption probably took place after the death of the mother (6.12.1918) there must be a mention inserted in the BOOK after the adoption. What office/person is entitled to consult the BOOK? Would the "Walter Foster, Superintendent Registrar" help further? I hope I don't abuse by coming back on the subject. Thank you and regards, André & Margaret STUECKELBERGER - ROBINSON in Sydney

The Durham Miners' Association was formed in 1869, and a separate county Union of Cokemen in 1874. As far as I am aware the bond only applied to miners, but I am sure someone will know for certain. In many instances a child was simply "adopted" into the extended family or taken in by neighbours/family friends and brought up as a member of their own family. Occasionally it was arranged through a solicitor, doctor or charitable organisation but adoption was viewed as an essentially private arrangement between the parties concerned. If any documentation has survived, it is likely to be found in the relevant county record office (with the solicitors' deposited material) or with the records of the organisation. However, to access these it is necessary to know the name of the solicitor/organisation and the approximate date on which the arrangement was made. Regards Stan Mapstone
Dear Lister, He was born on 1 Sep 1918 in Coundon Grange, Bishop Auckland and "adopted" is mentioned on the bottom of his birth certificate. His mother died 3 months after his birth. Answering my request for a second birth certificate or a certificate of adoption, GRO replies: <The only records of adoption held here are those made in the Adopted Children Register on the authority of adoption orders granted by the courts under the provisions of the Adoption Acts of England and Wales from 1927. Any adoption made by private arrangement prior to 1927 would not be recorded here. The 1926 Adoption Act which came into effect in 1927 was the first Act legalizing adoptions. Prior to that children were just handed over with mainly a verbal agreement and, at best, a declaration setting out the child's change of identity was drawn up by a solicitor? but it was by no means a legally binding document.> I am in a cul-de-sac and would be grateful to any one who would suggest in which direction I should orientate my research. Thank you and regards, André & Margaret STUECKELBERGER - ROBINSON in Sydney
Can any knowledgeable person tell me if the annual binding agreement would have applied to coke ovens workers, and what date it would have taken place (if at all) in 1871? Many thanks, Ian
Hi Irene Try sending an e-mail to Harry. He is deeply involved in the Durham Constabulary records. I'm sure he will try and help if he is able. He will definitely be able to tell you if there are any records in existence. Also have you tried the newspapers of that time if he was a prisoner his court appearance may be in. Justice was swift in those days. A friend of mine had a relative arrested for murder in November and hung in Durham Prison at end of December. harry.wynne@virgin.net Tony Surtees tsurt@btinternet.com >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I have found one of mine enumerated in 1861 at the police station in Seaham Harbour with relationship as "prisoner". He was 20 years old and a bottle maker. Would there be any records relating to this incarceration? If so, where to look? Since it was only the police station, would this probably be "drunk and disorderly" or the like? Or is it possible he was here pending more serious proceedings? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Irene

The parish register will have his father's occupation and address. The same details of siblings as above may be found either from the register or from the microfiche index (from which the above was taken) published by Original Indexes (1813-39). For elder siblings you will need to consult the H M Wood transcripts, available on microfiche from Northfiche. The parents, Alexander Rutledge and Mary Ross, were married in that same church on 21 February 1804. Details will be in the register, with simplified detaills in the Wood transcripts as above. Sunderland Local Studies Centre have copies of the local papers from 1831 onwards which are available on microfilm. They have the Sunderland Echo from 1873 to date and also keep some Seaham papers, the Seaham Observer 1858 - 1870 and the Seaham Weekly News 1860 - 1938. If you need to use the newspapers it is advisable to book a microfilm reader before you arrive as there is a heavy demand for them, a day or two's notice is all they require. An index to the papers is available. You can contact them at Local.Studies@edcom.sunderland.gov.uk Regards Stan Mapstone
