Make sure that you have entered something into each of the fields that are noted as "required". I think only last name was optional. 1. [ENG-DUR] NEAL and WOOD in Stockton and Darlington
    2. Hello, I am a new lister. I am researching the families of Ann Wood and George Neal who were married in Stockton on 27 January 1867. Ann's father was Stephen Wood, general labourer, and George's father Samuel (deceased at time of their marriage) a farmer. The 1881 Census for Stockton shows that Ann was born in Darlington and George in Lincolnshire. The 1891 Census shows George with a new wife, Charlotte (nee Fawcett) I have found a christening record on the IGI 04 JAN 1844 in Darlington, parents Stephen and Jane Wood. I have also found a birth record on freebmd for the birth of an Ann Wood in March qtr 1844 in Darlington, but I suspect that this may not be her unless she was christened within days of her birth. If anyone can connect with either family or offer any information to help me trace the couple's parents, I would love to hear from them. Many thanks Angela

    1. [ENG-DUR] Henry Featherston of Middle Rigg Durham
    2. Featherston
    3. I'm researching my husband's family, and have recently found information which suggests that they appear to be descended from Henry Featherston of Middle Rigg, Durham UK. According to the Durham 1841 Census, the family comprised Henry, 45, John 20, Ralph 15, Joseph 11, William 9 and Emerson 6. It seems that Henry's wife was no longer around at that date. Ralph married Mary Greggs in 1848 and emigrated to Australia around 1852, in the goldrush days, settling in Carngham/Snake Valley near Ballarat and having 12 children, including my husband's great grandfather Joseph, b Carngham Victoria in 1864, d. Ballarat 1914. Ralph d 1901 and Mary d 1907 are buried in Carngham cemetery. Joseph married Margaret Neilson in 1890 had 5 children, Joseph Henry ( b 1892 m Grace Calwell 1917 d 1951 Geelong, husband's gf), Emerson Ralph (b 1893 m Dorothy May Butcher 1918 Wentworth NSW, children Sylvia, Leslie, Clarence, Shirley, Lilly, Margaret, Ernest and Betty, d 1947 Mildura , Vic), Al! bert Leslie( b 1896 d 1916 WW1), Sylvia Mary ( b 1898 m Leonard Hamilton 1926 d 1949 Carlton Victoria ) and Lilian Myrtle b 1900. Any information regarding this family's antecedents, or connections to the other sons of Henry, some of whom may also have emigrated, or to other descendants of Ralph and Mary, or to Joseph's other children, Emerson Ralph Sylvia or Lilian, would be very welcome. cheers, Jo Featherston

Can't find my folks' births or marriages, although > the census films state that they were born in Newcastle onTyne > Civil Registration is precisely what it says it is - registration of ALL births, marriages and deaths, with no reference to any religious affiliation at all. It therefore covers EVERYONE. The Church of England does not register births or deaths. It does register baptism services and funeral services as well as burials within its own property - ie in churchyards. It registers marriages if they take place in its own churches, but not those in non-Church-of-England churches nor to se in Civilan Registry Offices (nor, nowadays, in other locations). If you can't find your "folks'" births or marriages then you cannot be looking in the right place for them! If they were Presbyterians then they were probably of Scottish extraction. Perhaps they went to Scotland for the religious ceremonies or indeed to give birth (civilian birth registrations are in the place where the birth takes place). I cannot give a more precise answer to your query, as you do not mention any date, and the precise situation depends a great deal on which period you are talking about. I assume that, as a researcher, you know the basic fact that civil registration began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837 and in Scotland on 1 January 1855. He is described as "Alderman, JP, of Manor House, Gilesgate, grocer, five times Mayor of Durham". He died on 24 February 1894. I doubt whether "Manor House" was a pub. It would probably be a large detached house standing in its own grounds. Whether it ever was truly a "manor house" (ie the residence of the Lord of the Manor and the centre of its administration) is open to doubt. If ever Gilesgate was a manor of its own, the lordship would have belonged to either the Bishop of Durham (and therefore now to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners) or else to Kepier Hospital, whose property came into lay hands after the Reformation and passed through several families, its ownership gradually being fragmented. A provision merchant was someone who dealt in provisions - ie a grocer, as stated in the Durham Directory. However, perhaps he was not so much a corner shop-keeper as a grocery wholesaler, perhaps with a chain of grocery shops. In modern British terms, more of a Lord Sainsbury than an Arkwright who needed to be "open all hours"! You could check the second edition of the OS maps (possibly the Godfrey Edition might help). Also, Durham County Record Office's on-line catalogue might help, as might an enquiry to Durham County Library Service. The Record Office might be persuaded, for a fee which you should enquire about in advance, to send you a photocopy of the Durham Directory Obituary. 2. G'day Listers, Was it usual, in 1919, that the given name of an adopted child was changed at the adoption. Ernest ROBINSON was b1918. His mother died 3 months after his death. According to his birth certificate he was "Adopted". Would his new parents have changed Ernest into another name? 3. Dear List, I have a missing relative called John GARDINER he married my Gt, gt, gt grandmother in 1867 in Weardale, Co Durham and I have their marriage Certificate, they were both 22 years old. He was a lead miner and was living at Weeds, which is near Westgate-in-wWeardale They had had two children but by 1872 his wife Margaret GARDINER nee NATTRASS was remarried to a Thomas WATSON and Margaret is listed on this second marriage certificate as widowed. However I cannot find any record of John GARDINER's death between 1867 and 1872. Even if I presume he was not really the biological father of the 2 children he was meant to be the father of. I have tried all of Durham and Northumberland and cannot find where he might be listed. Free BMD is no use and neither are the local burial records for Stanhope parish. I have tried alternate spellings and rough ages but no luck. Do you think he could have run off and Margaret is lying in order to remarry?! Has anyone got any ideas? However fantastic they're all welcome! Anna

    3. That's very interesting, Stan. Although there are no annotations on the certificate I have. I ordered the certificate from the GRO - I wonder if it would be worth ordering from the superintendent registrar for the appropriate district? Does anyone know if it is likely to be any different? I'd be very interested if there are annotations. I am fairly sure that this is my 2G-Grandfather, although he was registered under the name MELVIN & his name was really MILLET. Thanks for the info. The only reason I know is that there has been a correction to the original entry, in which case there should be an annotation. This annotation is part of the system of doing corrections in registers. All corrections of a minor nature occurring at the time of the entry have to be numbered, obviously to prevent someone coming along later and altering an entry. For errors discovered within a month of the entry being made then the registrar in the presence of the relevant parties, or in their absence in the presence of the Superintendent Registrar and two other credible witnesses, corrected the erroneous entry by entry in the margin, without making any alteration of the original entry, and signed the marginal entry, adding date when the correction was made. 3. Hello everyone I've today received a birth certificate for an ancestor of mine who was born in 1855. I believe the family were living in Waggon Row or Waggonman's Row in Usworth in 1851 & 1861. His sister's birth certificate clearly says Waggonrow Usworth. His birth certificate is not very clear, but it looks like Washingtonrow, Washington. It definitely isn't Waggon Row, and it certainly says Washington rather than Usworth. Could we be talking about the same place? Or is there a Washington Row that the family could have moved to (and then moved back again)? Also in the 1855 certificate under column 9 (signature of registrar) it says "Matthew Henderson Registrar, James Gray Superintendent Registrar" whereas the earlier 1852 certificate just says "Matthew Henderson Registrar". Is there any reason anyone knows of why a birth would be registered by two registrars? I only ask because this is a tricky family (living under different names at different times) and I'm trying to find out as much as possible about them just to make sure I've got the right people! Many thanks Best wishes Helen
