    3. Hi Listers, I have just received my ggrandfathers death cert. He died Dec. 27, 1918 at age 71 years in Poor Law Institution. The address under occupation (coal miner) was George St. Easington Lane. I don't know if this is his address or the Poor Law institution. His name was Patrick McDermott. He was married to Catherine Goodman. I wondered if anyone was going through the deaths could they keep an eye out for Catherine McDermott. I imagine she outlived him, but you never know. I would like to get her death cert., also. Best wishes Isabel Love B.C.Canada

There was a Convent for the Sisters of Charity of St. Paul, with schools, next to St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Worswick Street at that time. 2. Dave Dixon
    3. Hi Mike, I also am researching a Joseph DIXON family but rather think they are not related to yours. He married Mary ALLASON in the early 1820's. Three of their several children were Eliza, Charlotte, Sarah and John. Joseph worked for the railway and they moved around many times, within Co. Durham, then to Northants and even to Surrey so it has been difficult to I.D. them on a census. Regards. Dave.

I.G.I. tells me that an Ann COLLING was born in Chester-le-Street c.1786 but I can not find her. Any suggestions? Margaret (nee Colling) My best suggestion is - check the original registers, or microfilm copies of them. Do not be side-tracked into using transcripts, not even "good" ones, and certainly not poor-quality ones such as the IGI. That's the only way to be certain! . While I don't have any of the possible answers to your question, I would point out that they are likely to depend a great deal on which period you are talking about. Some mention of, at least, the century and, if the nineteenth, the decade, would be a great help to those who might have the answers. Remember that at the beginning of that century there was no Catholic emancipation but by the end of it there were two RC Dioceses in existence locally, that of Hexham and Newcastle and that of Middlesbrough. Also the nature of the RC church had undergone a tremendous change, from being the church of a handful of mainly wealthy landowning "county" families to being that of hordes of illiterate immigrant poor Irish labourers. . 2. John Rowley
    3. Dear Chris and list One way of finding out is to locate the local registrar office and supply them with the details of the birth etc but not the references as these are only used by ONS, and they even get them wrong! You often get the certificate by return of post! I did when looking for one in Birmingham, ONS could not locate the one I had found in their own index and charged me for it and I waited a month. I contacted the local registrar and had the copy within 2 days! Hope this helps. John Rowley ____________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
