    2. Barbara Tones
    3. In 1791 James TONES married Mary OVINGTON in Penshaw All Saints. Penshaw All Saints parish records list James TONES (Pitman na of Whickham) as father on baptisms of five children from 1800 to 1815 by his wife Mary SUTTON na of Washington. I am trying to find out if this could be the same James TONES. However, I can find no record of a death for either Mary TONES - nor a marriage between James TONES and Mary SUTTON. Can anyone tell me if the parish records would list the mother as "by his wife" if no marriage had taken place? or if they had lived together for long enough would she be accepted as his wife. Also if Mary TONES (nee OVINGTON) did not die before James started to have children with Mary SUTTON was divorce available around 1800? and is it something a pitman would do? Any advice or info would be most gratefully accepted. Regards Barbara TONES (nee JACKSON) born Sunderland - living Melbourne Australia.

    3. Hi Isabel, I know its a shot in the dark but I have a serious brick wall with the McDermott family so I wonder if you would tell me more about your Patrick McDermott? My grandmother was Mary McDermott who was born in Drummettagh, Fermanagh, Ireland in 1880. She married my grand-father, William Edward Boustead in 1903 St Charles, Tudhoe, Co.Durham. Her parents were Charles McDermott and Anne Curry who were both born about 1851 in Ireland, presumably Fermanagh or Tyrone. In 1891 they were living in Merrington, Co Durham and in 1903 moved to Middlestonemoor Co.Durham although I don't know where or when he died. Do you think there may be a connection? I am trying to find out if this could be the same James TONES. . It could be - perhaps this is really the same Mary and either (1) you have been using a badly-transcribed copy of the register, or perhaps have mis-read difficult handwriting yourself or perhaps (2) Mary was a widow at the time of her marriage to James Tones, and either she was nee Sutton and her first husband was Mr Ovington or vice-versa. When searching for any Ovington/Sutton and/or Sutton/Ovington marriage and also when searching for a Tones/Ovington one do remember that (a) Tones and Jones can be confused and (b) Sutton and Suthren/Southern/Southeron etc can also be confused. Also be sure to include Northumberland in your searches as well as Co Durham. . Also if Mary TONES (nee OVINGTON) did not die before James started to have children with Mary SUTTON was divorce available around 1800? and is it something a pitman would do? Divorces were rarely granted and when they were it required a Private Act of Parliament, which itself required so much cash (millions of pounds by today's standards) that anyone having it would certainly not have been working as a pitman! The effective answer to your question is therefore "No". . Of course, simply living together, with or without committing bigamy cost comparatively nothing, and was much more common than is often thought. . Darlington Library (Local Studies Dept) has most of them on film. However, if you contact the librarian, they should be able to help you. 1. MEABURN and METCALFE, mainly in Bishopton
    2. Arthur & Pauline Kennedy
    3. Since I've just joined this list and answered someone else's question, perhaps I should mention my own Durham interests: MEABURN - Bishopton - before about 1820 MEABURN - Norton (near Stockton) - a few years around 1860 METCALFE - Bishopton - about 1820-1850 METCALFE - Greatham - around 1850 Connected names include ROBINSON and STEPHENSON, but I know less about them. Most of ancestors are from Yorkshire, but there are also lines in Perthshire (Scotland) and Co. Armagh (Ireland). There's a list of the main surnames and counties at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~arthurk/ - sorry there's nothing else there at present, but I'm working on it! Arthur Kennedy

Look at a map of central London, and you'll find Hanover Square a short distance SW of Oxford Circus. St George's was the venue for many "society" weddings, and not everyone who married there would have lived in the parish. Arthur Kennedy

Please would it be possable for you to look for her ? Her name was "ISABELLA HALL" or " HARRISON" (she adopted her stepfathers name when she married and on the 1891, her sister has done this also) She would have been 14 years old, and on the 1881 census she gave her date of birth as Sedgfield, Durham.
