You could seek a record of them having been members of the relevant Durham City Trades Guilds - records in Durham County Record Office and possibly some in Durham University Library. However, there were few of those for Durham City and I am not at all sure of how long they lasted. Alternatively there are always Trade Directories, which would list furniture manufacturers who might have employed cabinet makers, if they did not have their own businesses. . I have just joined this list and wondered if S.K.S. would do a lookup on the 1891 census for me please. I am researching the BUCK family name and having problems with my husband's grandfather. On the 1901 census he states he was born in Walworth, which would have been 1870/1871. My problem is: was he born in Walworth near Cleveland? His marriage certificate gives his father's name as GEORGE BUCK deceased, this was in 1899 in London. If I could determine whether he was born in Walworth Cleveland or Walworth Surrey then my problem would be that much easier to solve. Many thanks, Jan, Dymchurch, Kent.

Is it possible to find where someone was living around 1925, place Newcastle-upon-Tyne. If so how would I go about it? Ann Barthram married George Elder 1907 in Newcastle they moved to Scotland shortly after they married. George died in Scotland,1918 what happened to Ann/Annie after that? I cannot find her or any of their family after 1918 in Scotland. Did they return to Ann/Annie home Town Newcastle-upon-Tyne, or did they emigrate? Can anyone help me over this Brick Wall Bob

Either way, if all you have to go on is "Newcastle upon Tyne", then you will have quite a search in front of you! Hi, If anyone is interested in seeing a postcard picture of the old Baptist Tabernacle, Stockton-on-Tees, then get back to me, and I'll send you the attachment of it. The Church used to be in Wellington Street, before it was knocked down quite a few years ago, to make way for a shopping development. The postcard I have, shows the inside of the church - mainly the big organ they had. They built a new church else where in Stockton. Just thought some of the listers ancestors may have attended that church, and might like to see what it looked like! Jan Boyes
Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Hi listers, I just wondered if anyone would have a picture of the Poor Law Institution Hospital in Houghton Le Spring? My ggrandfather died there Dec. 27, 1918. Could it be still standing? I know nothing of the place and would be interested in any information. Best wishes Isabel Love B.C. Canada
Hello Brian Many thanks for offering to keep an eye open for COLLING names in your parish, as you do your own research. Unfortunately the only information I have about ANN COLLING is that she gave birth to an illegitimate son, THOMAS in 1815, so I am presuming she must have been born before 1800. The only parish registers to cover this period for Harraton area seem to be those of Chester-le Street, which I searched some years ago to no avail, though I did find many COLLINGS in Chester-le-Street and Fatfield. No, I have no census information about ANN but I believe she may have married after THOMAS'S birth ( An ANN COLLING married THOMAS BARRASS in 1816 in the same Houghton -le- Spring parish in which THOMAS was born.) I do have THOMAS COLLING'S details in all but one of the census records from 1841 but ANN does not feature in any of them. (Thomas married in 1840) Look forward to hearing from you, if any COLLINGS pop up! Regards, Margaret.
Hi all, Am reposting interests after some time away: John ELLIOTT b. 25/10/1809 Durham, St. Giles, m. Ann BROCKBANK b.1815 Hexham. His father John ELLIOTT m. Mary RENNY in 1801 St. Giles. Looking in particular for details of the latter John ELLIOTT, I have no details of birth. Does anyone have info. on marriages such as the one above. Does it say in the banns/parish records where the groom and bride are from? Also looking for parents of Joseph COLLINGWOOD b. 1824 Stanhope. Father Joseph COLLINGWOOD, mother ? Any links or information would be gratefully received! Kind Regards Sara Shropshire UK
Hello Margaret, I live in the parish and will keep a look-out for the surname "Colling" when I am researching my own family! There are lots of churches and chaple's in this parish !!! which ones have you look at ? Have you got "Ann" on any census info ? (I'm sorry I havn't followed your messages) I visited "Tyne and Wear Archives", Blandford House, (part of the "Discovery Museum Newcastle") last year searching the "Harraton" records, The following "Methodist" registers are held there for baptisms and some marriages ! (pre 1800) Washington Old Road from 1883-1926 Washington Staithes 1870-1938 These are original copies bound in book form (most are very easy to read) There are also Paupers registers for this period (You might find something ) and school lists, some give names of pupils ! They also hold Church records for Baptisms, Banns, Marriages and Burials >>> Fatfield "St George" 1876-1978 Chester-le-street "St Mary and St Cuthbert" 1582-1987 Usworth "Holy Trinity" 1835-1978 Usworth Colliery "St Michael & All Angels" 1904-1959 Hope this might be of help to you Carole Robinson ----- Original Message ----- From: "margaret murdoch" <mgtmurdoch@clara.co.uk> To: <ENG-DURHAM-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 24, 2004 9:57 PM Subject: [ENG-DUR] ANN COLLING from HARRATON > Hi Geoff > > Many thanks for your suggestion to look at original parish registers for > ANN's birth. Hello ROXBY researchers: Janis - it sounds like you might have done a lot of research on the ROXBY family. I'm looking for a John ROXBY born c. 1824 in Newbottle. This John married Mary Ann DEFTY in 1856 at Dalton le Dale. On his marriage certificate he gives his father's name as Matthew GUSTARD. Now Matthew is easy to find and trace but at no time does he appear to be associated with any ROXBYs. It seems likely that John ROXBY was therefore an illegitimate son. Since I don't know John's mother's name he's proving a bit difficult to find. I have John and his family on the 1861 census and all subsequent ones in Seaham Harbour. But even though I've trawled a lot in 1841 and 1851 in and around Newbottle I can't find a suitably aged John ROXBY who would be illegitimate. I wonder if he is a twig on your tree. Thanks very much, Irene PS It doesn't appear that John resented his parentage because he named a son Henry Gustard ROXBY after his (putative) paternal grandfather. PPS I've been recording 1841 ROXBY families just in case they happen to be relevant, if you are interested. -----Original Message----- From: Janis Noonan [mailto:2zpool@charter.net] Sent: Sunday, April 25, 2004 7:25 PM To: ENG-DURHAM-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ENG-DUR] Roxby, Walker, Readman Helen, I have Roxby's in my line. Hi Can anyone help me to trace the birth of John E. SURTEES. In 1881 he appears 16yrs with his parents and family at Low Moorsley Durham. His birth place is Crook. This would put him born c 1865 In 1891 he is listed as 26yrs born Crook. Living Wolstanton Stafford with parents and family. I have searched the church records between 1864 & 1867 incl. and the Internet but cannot nail his birth down. Any help would be gratefully received to fill in this blank.
