Many thanks for those who replied to my query on the asylum at Sedgefield. I am still typing away but have become very angry to find pages and pages of inmates reduced to initials. From a researchers point of view its disgusting; I realise that views on insanity and mental problems have changed but its so degrading to be reduced to letters just because of their condition. Just shows how we have changed in our views and thinking. (Getting down off the soap box now) Happy Hunting; "There are no strangers out there; only friends I have not yet met." Annie

Dear Listers I am looking for the birth of Albert HART who married Selina LUMSDEN in 1902 aged 22yrs. According to now deceased members of the family, he was adopted. In the 1881 census there is a Anthony DAWSON aged 15months, born Garsfield, DUR, adopted son of Albert HART and his wife Rachel. In 1891 census there is a Albert HART aged 11years, born Byerside, which I am presuming, perhaps wrongly, is the Anthony DAWSON in 1881 census. In the Birth Records there is a Anthony DAWSON born Dec 1879 Sunderland. Could someone please tell me if Garsfield or Byerside is near Sunderland? Thanking you Mary Hart

Can anyone help please I have looked in the 1861 & 1871 Library census for Crook Co. Durham but have missed or cannot find- William Surtees, Isabella (wife), Joseph C. Isabella & Edward (later also John Wm & Ellen) In 1851 William is 36yrs They are at Railway Weigh House Crook (next listing is Bank Foot) In 1853 Isabella aged 5 is buried at Crook (abode Bank Foot) In 1875 Isabelle & William are buried at Crook. In 1881 the children John Wm & Ellen (Forster) are still at Crook. (High Hope Street) I believe they would be in the Crook area in 1861 & 1871 can anyone help me fill in this gap. I have a lot of other info on the whole family. The William & Sarah 1871 in High Hope Street are not immediate family but will be related as this Surtees came from Haydon Bridge as well.
