    3. -----Original Message----- From: Jan Glasby Subject: [ENG-DUR] 1891 census lookup please - NAYLOR Hi all,Could SKS check the 1891 census for three brothers, the sons of George NAYLOR and Ann LAMB who married in Newcastle in 1825. Hi Jan Have you any idea on the area within Durham? The 1891 Durham Census covers a vast area and is made up of 10 discs. Unfortunately, it is not searchable by name but it does contain a street index for various areas. A particular area would help to narrow the search down. Regards Sue Sunderland

    3. My g/grandfather Thomas NEASHAM born 1866 Durham married Elizabeth TAYLOR born c1885 at The Registry Office, Durham on 7 November 1905. To my knowledge they had 3 sons Thomas, George & Robert. At the time of marriage Thomas NEASHAM was living at 75 New Elvet Durham and Elizabeth TAYLOR at Douglas Terrace, Gilesgate. It is believed that Thomas NEASHAM lived in Cowpen c1930 and his occupation was Master Tailor. Would welcome contact from anyone researching similar families or who think they may connect. 2. My husband's great grandfather George ALLEN won the Military Medal for bravery in World War I. I would like to get the medal record from Documents Online but there are a lot of George ALLENs on the list. The information I have is that he served in the 3rd Northumbrian Brigade. Does anybody know what regiment this would be? George ALLEN played the trombone in the Seaham Colliery band and played the lodge into Durham for the big meeting up to 1939 despite having a wooden leg. I would like to know more about this ancestor. Thanks, Irene

    3. Hi Carole Many thanks for the Monumental Inscription from All Saints Church, Penshaw and for the snippet about people rowing across the river from Harraton. I wonder if it is possible for Harraton people to be baptised at this church. If so, I may find Ann's birth there. I shall certainly make a point of joining the N&D Family History Society as it looks as though I may find very useful information concerning all branches of our family. The only other reference to BARRASS that I have jotted down along the way, is from the 1851 census for Houghton:- 157 Colliery Row Ann Barrass head widow 80 pauper b. Fatfield 178 Colliery Row Ann Barrass head widow 76 pauper b. Tanfield Robert Maddison son unm. 56 miner b. Fatfield Mary A Fletcher gr.dt. 12 b. Widow "Ann", w a / n "Edward" d 29/10/1851 aged 85 Penshaw is accross the river from "Harraton" people used to row accross, there is a bridge there now! 3. Hi Listers, I am still trying to trace Henry Widdowfield/Widowfield. He was born abt 1828. I found him again in Census 1841, age 13 in South Shields District, but the family might have moved to Tanfield or Houghton.. His father Robert, stepmother, Sarah Craggs or Ann Maugham. He has a brother, James age 12 and brother Edward, age 2. a sister Elizabeth or Mary age 10 and stepbrother William, age 10 months. [all from 1841 census]. I cannot find Henry as an adult, whether he died or came to USA [as many of his brothers did] Any help will help a lot and I hope someone will find the family in 1851 OR 1861. Thank you for your time. Phyllis USA

    1. ILEY (from Wolsingham) query
    2. John Tillotson
    3. Greetings I'm looking for more information on Ann Iley (or her forbears). She married into my wife's family - marrying an Edward Deighton from Brough (Westmorland). They lived at Wolsingham for a while and then he took her back to Brough. They had a son called Joseph William. Her parents were Joseph Iley (b 1791 ish) and Isabella Something-or-other (b 1799 ish) Here is the information I have so far :- 1851 census - age 12 - Scholar - Causeway, Wolsingham On Joseph William's birth certificate (13/8/1870) address is Backlane, Wolsingham 1871 census - age 32 - living Back Lane, Wolsingham 1881 census - age 42 - lodging with husband & son - Sunniside, Crook & Billy Row, Durham 1891 census - age 52 - 50, Up Market Street, Brough - name given as 'Annie' 1901 census - age 61 - (name 'Annie') - Church Brough Does anyone have birth / christening details for Ann - or marriage details for Ann and Edward Deighton (son born 1870) - or marriage details for Joseph & Isabella - or anything earlier ?? Family rumour says Ann and Edward had other children 'who did not survive' - where can I get clues to investigate this ? I'll have a closer scan of Wolsingham in the 1841 census for Ann and her parents - and for Wolsingham and Brough in 1861 for Ann - in about 2 weeks time (clues would be welcome !!). All the best John Tillotson

    1. [ENG-DUR] ILEY (from Wolsingham) query
    2. Janis Noonan
    3. John, You can find a marriage certificate for Ann Iley and Edward Deighton in 1864 Durham Western (Bp Auckland). If you are from out of area (or country) and have no way of getting there you can order this on line with a credit card at: http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/search.nsf/search?openform It takes about 7-10 days to your doorstep. This is a boon to those whose money system is not in £'s or live out of the country. You can get certificates from the GRO but only if you live in the UK or have someone there working for you. There is a birth certificate available for Ann Iley in Durham Western for 1838. That one seems the most likely. There were two in Durham Western for in the 1840's but they are like 1845 and 1848. Hope this helps, Janis

    1. Re : 1891 Census info Durham
    2. brian ROBINSON
    3. Thankyou everyone for the census info, there were three more additions to the family, and the birth place for my great-grandmother was news to me, Eppleby, Yorkshire ! Elizabeth Sokell gave Durham on the 1881 census. At first I thought it could be Eppleton in Durham. I looked on Genuki and found the parish was part of Forcett, Richmondshire. Some parish records were transcribed, which included Elizabeth, and two of her brothers, these tie in with the marriage certificate I have although her maiden name on that is Sokell, (always suprises) There's another brick wall knocked down ! Thankyou Carole Robinson

    3. Hi Listers, I am researching Henry Widdowfield/Widowfield born about 1828 Sunderland or Houghton le Spg. I found him again in the index 1841. He has a brother, James b. abt. 1829, a sister Mary b. 8 May 1836, and another brother, Edward b.1837 Hetton le Hole died.after 1900. immigrated to USA. Father should be Robert, mother Martha Murdy. Henry would be 13 years old, James, 12. If one of you can look in the 1841 census, hopefully I will get over this brick wall! Thank you for your time. Take Care, Phyllis USA

    3. Thankyou to all the people who responded to my request for the 1891 census lookup for "William James Holmes" he is my paternal grandfather. I have now inherated another three ancestors, and also found the birth place of my great-grandmother Elizabeth Sokell(Solkell) which is Eppleby, Yorkshire. On the 1881 census she gave Durham! Thanks again Carole Robinson
