    3. Right, here's a thought for the 1881 but it might be totally wrong. Have been on the LDS website. Living at Spen 38 Clayton Terrace, Chopwell is a family called HERRON including 2 Elizabeths, mother (born Greenside) and daughter (born Chopwell) aged 53 and 31. Head of house was George Herron. Living at Spen 42 Clayton Terrace, Chopwell is a family called ROBINSON including a George (born Crawcrook) aged 8. Head of house was Samuel Robinson. Is it possible that Harrison has been mistranscribed to Herron? Hi Ruby Sorry I cannot help with your query but I too have the same problem and wondered maybe the more knowledgeable members on the list may be able to offer suggestions. I am researching DOSH and after trying all variants of the name I can only find one person by that name on the 1881, a son John William living with his grandparents. I have the family, including John William all together on the 1891 Census living in Boldon and I know a son Joseph was born 1880 Sunderland but as I say all efforts have proved fruitless. Any ideas list members? Regards Sue

    3. Hi List, I have noticed recent postings mentioning BARNARD CASTLE. I had previously thought this was an actual castle, I am now wondering if it is instead a district, town or city perhaps? My great, great grandmother MARY SPENCER was born in Barnard Castle and christened there 11 January,1827. Daughter of WILLIAM SPENCER and ELIZABETH GLENDENING who had married in 1825. All set sail on 19 April 1828 on the SHIP "CAROLINE" arriving in AUSTRALIA as free settlers. Any further information on their ancestry, connections etc would be appreciated. Regards JANADELE, in Pyrmont, Sydney AUSTRALIA.

I had previously thought this was an actual castle, I am now wondering if it is instead a district, town or city perhaps? . . It is a market town in the Tees valley, named after its mediaeval castle, built there by Barnard Baliol and the scene of Sir George Bowes' spirited defence against the rebels in the Rising of the North in 1569. It is known for its associations with Charles Dickens, who stayed there, at the King's Head, when researching Teesdale schools for "Nicholas Nickleby" and who at the same time was intrigued by a clock standing in a shop belonging to someone called Humphrey - and so was inspired to write "Master Humphrey's Clock". Barnard Castle is the site of the excellent Bowes Museum, which has a claim to consider the famous Beamish Museum as one of its "spsin-offs". It is located in a rather incongruous French Chateau, built by John Bowes for his French (ex-actress) wife. Barnard Castle is also the home of the Northern Counties school, one of the leading Public Boarding Schools in the north of England. Barnard Castle was the centre of an ancient parish of that name, with St Mary's as its parish church. The town and anything associated with it is often referred to locally just as "Barny". . . That is vey unlikely. Perhaps your "anywhere" is not as comprehensive as you think, especially if it is based on a compurer search. Have your searches included Northumberland? - Chopwell and Greenside are only a mile or two from the county boundary. Perhaps they were in Scotland - only a day's travel away. Perhaps they were in Ireland - not covered by the FFHS/LDS transcript of the 1881 census. Perhaps they had emigrated. People did that, and many of them later returned; if it all happened between censuses, modern-day researchers, unless they are very thorough, often miss the fact completely. Perhaps your family were away for census day. Perhaps you are looking for the wrong surname - Harrison was often written as "Herrison", for instance. Perhaps you are concentrating on the one member of the family who was not at home on census night. Of all the possibilities I would say, from experience, that simply being missed off the actual census is the least likely: indeed is it more likely if they really are not to be found, that they were omitted from the transcription! . . 2. In a message dated 16/06/2004 01:03:26 GMT Daylight Time, christine1945@blueyonder.co.uk writes: I am looking for Ann YATES born about 1777 in Barnard Castle . . Remember that spelling was not standardised until c1900. What you know as Yates could be in the baptism regosters as Yeats. Barnard Castle itself had not only the parish church but an Independent Church (founded 1801: existing registers begin 1806) and a Methodist one (circuit registers begin 1803), all with pre-1837 registers, though they begin too late for your purposes. If the family were Roman Catholics they might appear in the Lartington RC registers (within the C of E parish of Romaldkirk, further up the Dale, on the then Yorkshire side. Also, and probably more important, remember that there was a considerable Quaker presence in Teesdale. You might find them in Quaker records. Try Durham County Record Office for Quaker (Society of Friends) Monthly Meeting records. . . People often, even today, say "Barnard Castle" when they mean "the general Barnard Castle district" and at the time you refer to all that district on the south of the Tees was in the North Riding of Yorkshire. My advice is therefore (a) look in Yorkshire and (b) look for Yeats. . . 3. Eileen, 1841 Census, Houghton le Spring District East Rainton, Outlying Farms & Dwellings, Trough Houses Valentine Bailey, 75, Coalminer Mary Bailey, 75 There was also a baptism of a Valentine Bailey in Houghton le Spring - St Michael and all Angels, 6 March 1825 and the parents names were William and Bridget Bailey living in Hetton. This is this family in 1851 1851 Census, Houghton le Spring District East Rainton 1851 Census, Outlying Farms & Dwellings, Hazard Pit William Bailey, Head, married, 56, Storekeeper, born Chester-le-Street, County Durham Bridget Bailey, Wife, married, 49, born Washington, County Durham Valentine Bailey, son, 26, Joiner, born Hetton-le-Hole, County Durham Isabel Bailey, daughter, 20, Dressmaker, born East Rainton, County Durham Margaret Bailey, daughter, 14, Scholar, born East Rainton, County Durham George Bailey, son, 10, Scholar, born East Rainton, County Durham William T. Palmer, grandson, 5, Scholar, born Monkwearmouth, County Durham My guess is that the Valentine born 1825 is more likely the grandson of the 75 year old Valentine in the 1841 census. No proof mind you The IGI extracted records show a Valentine Bailey christening 19 May 1865 with parents Wm Bailey and Jane. And a Marriage to Mary Ord on 18 Feb 1786 all in Chester le Street. 2. Murray Jones
    3. Good morning I am new to this list and posting my quest to find my great-grandfather John TURNER (b. 8th March 1861 surname HENDERSON) at Sunderland, Co. Durham. John's mother Mary HENDERSON (nee TURNS) remarried after her first husband Robert died. She married William TURNER Feb. 2, 1868, making John about 7 years old at the time. Mary and William raised John's son as theirs. The mother of John's son was a Sarah BRANCH. I am currently trying to find John TURNER. Not sure if he would have kept his birth name or used his stepfather's last name, as in the 1881, census when/if he married. There are two John TURNERs in the 1891 census age 30 and born Sunderland but marriage registrations don't seem to fit. No John HENDERSONs at all in the age rang 28-32 in 1891. Would love to hear if perhaps anyone has a John TURNER married, after 1880, with father Robert HENDERSON (Blacksmith) or William TURNER (Joiner) listed on marriage registration. My apologies to those list members also on the NORTHUMBRIA and DUR-NBL lists if you have heard this before. Thanks and have a great day. Murray Jones Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

He should be living somewhere in the Gateshead/Heworth/Felling area and be with his wife Jane and children. Robson would be 36 and Jane (if she is still living) 35. Their children would include: Thomas aged 21 Jane Ann aged 19 Faith aged 18 Mary aged 16 Margaret aged 14 William 10 John George 7 Robson 6. They were at Hays Cottages Windy Nook on the 1861 and in Heworth on the 1881.
