    2. Chris Hopkins
    3. I am new on here, can anybody help with info regarding Thomas & Norah Hopkins (nee Gray) they lived in Ryhope, they are my grandparents and as both were born in 1905 i.e. too late for any census that can be accessed. He was a coal miner, they had around 6 children, at least one of which is now dead. Norah was a long time member of the Labour Party she went into an old peoples home near Ryhope Church which I think was where she died in 1995. To my recollection they lived at Hewitt Avenue, Rothbury & Ravenscroft in Ryhope. --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! Messenger - sooooo many all-new ways to express yourself

    1. Anthony - Muller
    2. Anthony Oliver
    3. Hi I am interested to hear from anyone researching the family names of Anthony or Muller. Hi My Anthony's originally came from Blakney in Norfolk and settled in South Shields in the mid 1800s. I know little about the Mullers with the exception that my G Grandfather's daughter, Jane Elizabeth Anthony married William Max Muller in 1898. I believe Elizabeth and Max had children, Dick, Jenny and possibly Hans Muller. My father understood that Dick Muller was murdered! I will investigate local newspapers however I am interested if police records are maintained for this period, which I would guess is 1814 - 1818, although I guess the family would have received little sympathy. Any guidance would be appreciated. Regards, Anthony

    3. Dear List I am a new subscriber to this list and are hoping that someone can help me with my enquiry. > > My great grandfather, James CUTTER, was employed as an underground horsekeeper with the Wearmouth Colliery in Southwick, Sunderland. > > On or around 1924/25 he was kicked by a horse while at work which resulted in him losing his sight. As a result, he spent the last 25 years of his life blind and much of that time living alone in Southwick. There are some great stories handed down about how he got around including knowing the number of steps to the tram stop, the number of steps from the tram to his favourite pub on The Green and being able to find his spot at the bar from some notches he carved into the bar. > > Having had the opportunity to spend some time in Southwick last year, I was able to find 2 pubs still in existence (the TRAM CAR INN and the SUN INN), however, I could not find the pub my great grandfather used to frequent, the SMITHS ARMS (which is what I understand it was called). > > My questions are: > > 1.. Can anyone confirm that the SMITHS ARMS existed in Southwick? > 2.. If it did exist, where exactly was it located? > 3.. Does anyone know where I could find any old photographs of this pub or The Green, Southwick or even an old map showing exactly where the pubs were/are located? > Any help would be very gratefully appreciated. > > Kind Regards > > Grahame McDonald > Sydney Australia

If it did exist, where exactly was it located? > 3.. Does anyone know where I could find any old photographs of this pub or The Green, Southwick or even an old map showing exactly where the pubs were/are located? . Grahame: . . I have looked at: (a) "Southwick on Wear, an Illustrated History", by Peter Gibson (1985) (Southwick Publications, no ISBN - ! ) . and: . (b) "Old Pubs of Sunderland" by Alan Brett and John Royal (Black Cat Publications 1993 ISBN 0 9518043 5 9). . Both these include (different) photographs of the pub, which seems to have been a typical "end of terrace pub", in this case on the south side of Southwick Green. It was at the west end of a terrace in which there were really only three premises - the Smith's Arms at one end, the Old Mill Inn at the other and a house used as a blacksmith's shop in the middle. From the photos it looks as though each had taken in a house originally next door. In the case of the Smith's Arms that was the old smithy, which had been run by someone named Hayton up to 1894, and then by Marches until they moved into new premises in the King's Road in 1912. . . The terrace was built in the 1820s and the Smith's Arms was demolished in August 1984 after standing derelict for four or five years. The rest of the terrace had been demolished around 1981. A local councillor attempted to have the Smiths Arms listed as a building of architectural interest, but failed (quite honestly, as far as I can see from the photo it was typical but in no way special or outstanding). The photo in "Old pubs of Sunderland" was apparently taken in the early or mid-twentieth century and shows a large sign on the wall outside, on the part of the premises originally the smithy, advertising "Lorimers famous Edinburgh Ales". After the first World War the large Sunderland brewery of Vaux acquired a number of small breweries, including that of Lorimer and Clark, thereby bringing Scotch Ales into Wearside. Vaux houses sold Lorimers Scotch Ale right up to the demise of that brewery just a few years ago. The photo on "Southwick on Wear" was taken in about 1946, and then the sign, in much the same position, read "Vaux's Draught. Beer at its best". The Old Mill was also a Vaux's house. . . 2. Alf & Barbara Rosethorne
    3. Hi List, To everyone that I'm doing look ups for, I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks but have extended the loan period for the film so will resume look ups when I get back. In doing these look ups I can certainly appreciate how difficult it would be transcribing films. Thank you to all the folk who do this on a regular basis, you have my admiration. There were sections that were out of focus & some so faded they were unreadable. Not too easy to look for thirty odd names! To the people that I've not been in touch with this means that I haven't found anything for you yet.Plus like I said some records were illegible, hope they weren't yours! Bye for now Barbara

    1. John Armstrong in 1851 census?
    2. Robyn Leeds
    3. Hi everyone :) I'm sorry to be a bother again, but does anyone have access to the 1851 census to check this entry for me please? ... "On the Durham Records Online website I think I found your Elizabeth Armstrong Aged 2 Born in Lambton and residing in the Houghton-le-Spring area on the 1851 census. The head of the household was a John Armstrong aged 28 born Windyside in Stanhope." Is Lambton in the Durham Northern area? I might have to go check out Records Online to find that out, but if possible I'd like to check this entry without having to spend any money. We've had a bad couple of months and a military wage is bad enough to begin with, so any help would be enormously appreciated!! :D Take care, Rob. 2. dawn thornton
    3. Hi Everyone: I am stuck in the 1880's trying to trace my Thornton ancestors (Robert Thornton & Mary Alice Pemberton). So I thought I might post some of the names of my more recent relatives in hopes that someone out there is connected and can fill in the blanks. Richard Thornton (son of the above) b. 1859 d. 1934 in Boldon. He is buried with second wife Susannah Handy in Boldon Cemetary. Their children are as follows: Robert b. 1892 emigrated to Canada in 1923 Edward b. 1893 married Dorothy Ann ? . She died in 1921 after giving birth to a son Edward. Mary Jane b. 1898 Richard b. 1899 never married and died in 1954. Richard Sr. also had a child Margaret b. 1880 by his first wife Eliza Roberts. Is anyone connected to these people or know anything about them ? If so I'd love to here from you. Thanks so much, Keith Thornton Ontario, Canada

    2. Hi Geoff: None of this thread applied to professionals as far as I was concerned. It's a whole different story, as you say. I think that many listers would be absolutely delighted to have the benefit of the expertise of professionals like you. I've used professional genealogist services myself before in small ways (notably to look up Naval records at Kew). I've usually been pleased with the results but I have paid for services before where nothing was found. This is to be expected, of course, but it's still painful. To me this is a hobby and if I'm barking up the wrong (family) tree then so be it. Because of the prevalence of extra-marital events this is a certainty for all of us anyway, the further back we go. It's the fun of the chase that keeps me hooked. I'm glad you can make a living doing this interesting work, although I'm sure that some of it is drudgery just like anyone's job. And at least we get benefit of your advice for free on this list. It's always most welcome. Regards, Irene

The baptism dates you quote are all within the "Barrington period" when, within Durham Diocese which Gateshead is, lots of details are given about the parents of children being baptised. That detail includes things such as the names of the parishes of which each parent was a native, as well as where the child came in the family (1st son, third daughter, etc), and usually other things such as the address and occupation of the father. Knowing where these parents came from should then be an excellent clue for you to use in locating their baptisms. . .
