    3. Hi all I'm new from downunder. I am researching my ancestors John and Ann HALLIFAX who were teachers at the National School in Witton Gilbert near Durham in the late 1850s to mid 1860s. Ann died there in 1864. Would anyone be connected or have information on the school or perhaps know if any records survive? Regards Liz Vincent 02 4677 2044 / 0419 003 806 P.O. 1. [ENG-DURHAM] Help with occupation on 1841 in Whickham Dunstan, STEWART
    2. Hi list, please can someone have a look at the 1841 in Middle Row, Whickham Dunstan,at the occupation of James Stewart aged 25? It looks like the twirly letter I and I have no idea what it could mean. Also, does anyone think that the answer to "whether born in county" is a no? as on subsequent censuses, James says he was born Durham,Gateshead, and there is a James Stewart on the IGI born 1817,bapt 1818 in Gateshead, parents William & Jane, and I have also found a marriage in Durham & Gateshead marriages transcription for a William Stewart & Jane Simpson, 1815 which would fit in with this birth. This one on the 1841 is the only James Stewart I can find, and I have no trace of his parents on the 1841 at all. Many thanks Ann

    3. This enumerator's I's and J's look very similar. Looking at other pages there is an Isabella followed by a John and the first letters look identical There are also other's with the same I or J as occupation. Some entries have "J" that I take to mean Journeyman and there are in the same family some that are "Ap" Doesn't journeyman what though. What was your James Stewart's occupation in subsequent census? Janis

    1. [ENG-DURHAM] Francis OLIVER born c1798 in GAINFORD
    2. The Andersons
    3. I am trying to trace Francis OLIVER, who according to the 1851 census was 53 years old and born in GAINFORD, Durham. He was living in Shrewsbury, Shropshire by then and is listed as farm bailiff and had married a Shropshire girl. I can trace him downwards from there and his family. I cannot find any sign of his birth. I did find through IGI a William OLLIVER marrying Mary HODGSHON on 21 Dec 1794 in GAINFORD. Perhaps they could be his parents. Is there anybody working on the OLIVER or HODGSHON families in that area? Any information would be gratefully received. Pauline Ontario, Canada

    3. Difficult to know with the information you have, Janet. Possibly you are looking at different Williams, or perhaps his wife died & he married another with the same (rather common) Christian name. Since the 1851 and 1871 censuses are 20 years apart, it is quite reasonable for the children of 1851 to have left home - or died with the relatively high mortality rates of the mid 19th c. You could order the (several) candidate marriage certificates to see what fits, or you could take a chance on the baptism and burial records - and marriage if you are even more lucky - of the local parish church. Of course, they could have married elsewhere, been non-conformist or whatever. A determined look for William (perhaps without Mary A) in 1861 would be worthwhile. Finally, of course, they could be the same William and Mary A, and at least one census could be wrong in some details. You don't say where the Mary A(s) were born? Do they tie up? 2. Jan, Look at Census 1861 (3734-45-33). 40 yr old unmarried ( a weaver on 51 and 71, but lab here) with 19 yr old Mary Ann house servant. As Ian suggests, first Mary A might have died ( candidate @ June Qtr, Hexham 1852) Michael Dixon

    2. In a message dated 07/03/2007 21:42:13 GMT Standard Time, [email protected] writes: I wonder if anyone can help me I have a WILLIAM MOODY D.O.B. ABT 1820 EBCHESTER Jan: A John and Jane Moody had a son William baptised at Ebchester on 2 January 1818. They were of Ebchester Mill and John was a wool spinner. The same couple had another child, William, baptised, also at Ebchester, on 20 March 1819. The parents don't seem to have married at Ebchester. I doubt whether they married in Co Durham at all and my database is not comprehensive enough for me to say much about a possible marriage in Northumberland, except that two possibilities are John Moody and Jane Hogarth who married at Newcastle St John on 9 November 1814 and John Moody and Jane Thompson who married at Elsdon on 17 July 1817. This last reference is from the BTs, the parish marriage register for that period being lost. The timing of the Elsdon entry is what, in practice, one tends to get between the wedding and the baptism of the first child! However, we don't know whether William really was his parents' first child - the may have married much earlier and had other children elsewhere before they had William Geoff Nicholson
