    2. In a message dated 04/04/2007 14:16:41 GMT Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I have a John RICHARDSON, b. ca 1818 Brancepeth. I look at the LDS film and there is a gap in records 1813-1850s - where are these missing records or can they be held in another parish? Michael: There is no gap in Brancepeth baptisms during the period you mention. The LDS have been known not to film registers for certain periods from certain parishes on the grounds that they do not regard them as bona fide parish registers, and that could be what has happened here. The LDS seem ready to be put off by any little irregularity in the books. At Ryton, for instance, one of the late-18th century marriage volumes is missing but there is a notebook of the parish clerk which is as good as a register by anyone's standards, being the book from which he wrote up the registers. However, the LDS, although they have filmed it, do not include the entries on eg the IGI. You could check on this by enquiring at Durham County Record Office (or, better still, Google for their on-line catalogue), where Brancepeth registers are deposited, or else enquire at Durham University Library, where the BTs should be. The BTs may stop in 1837 but they often continue for several years later than that. Please note that the 19th-century Brancepeth registers were deposited in the Record Office well before the disastrous fire there a few years ago so there is no question of their having been destroyed in the fire. For the period you mention there should be birth certificates for each child born (after 1 July 1837), so even if the baptism registers were missing, which I doubt, it should not prevent your getting all the relevant details. 1. Re: [ENG-DURHAM] deaths of the STEWARTS Gateshead
    2. Ann: The NDFHS index to all burials in Co Durham 1813-1839 (there is a similar one for Northumberland) includes that of William Stewart of Gateshead, buried at Gateshead (St Mary's) on 24 November 1818, aged 32. There is no suitable entry for Jane. If this is your William then Jane would have been left as a fairly young widow and, having at least one young child, would have been keen to find a new husband to look after her and her family. If she did marry again, we have no guarantee that she would have remained in Gateshead for that: she could have gone anywhere and the big city of Newcastle beckoned from just across the Tyne. However, it does seem plausible that she was the Janet Stuart who married Henry Forbes at Gateshead on 3 June 1822 (information from the NDFHS index to all marriages in Co Durham 1813-37: there is a similar index for Northumberland). If you were to view the originals of the parish registers, or a microfilm copy of them, then you would be able to see Janet's signature (if she was literate) in 1815 and in 1822 and that might help you decide whether it really was the same person. For the re-marriage of a widow (she might be so described in the entry for her second marriage, a good bonus) there is a chance that it was by Licence, another source of useful background. William's death might be commemorated by a gravestone (MI) in St Mary's churchyard but there were so many burials there that only a tiny proportion were so recorded, and they were usually of the more wealthy families. It might even be worthwhile seeking a Will for William. Note that Jane called herself Janet, the Scottish form of the name, at her second marriage. She also used Stuart (the version of Stewart used by Scottish Royalty) and married a Forbes (another good old Scottish surname), so it might not be such a wild guess to suspect that she may have been of Scottish extraction! The indexes I have mentioned are extremely useful and are available for purchase on microfiche or on CD. I think both William & Jane must have died before the 1841 census and I am trying to locate their burial places. Any suggestions most welcome Thanks Ann
