I'm researching my DENTON family of Sedgefield, Ferryhill and Ashington. Thomas DENTON married Jane CALVERT at Sedgefield on 21 Jan 1793 - but where and when was he born/baptised? There is a possible record of his baptism in Durham, St Giles, ten miles from Sedgefield, in 1767. But I am wondering if anyone else is interested in this family and has a more definitive record. Pat: Do you know where and when he died? His age would probably be recorded in his burial record. Although such records are notoriously unreliable, nevertheless they are usually within a few years of the real one. Did he live to have his "age" recorded in the 1841 census or, better still, though much less likely, the 1851 census? Marrying in 1793, he probably continued to have children until after the start of the "Barrington period" (1798-1812) when very detailed records of baptism were the norm in Durham Diocese. Those records, similar to the "Dade" registers in use in some other Dioceses, should tell you the parish of which each parent was a native - ie where they had been born. You know about the Sedgefield wedding, but how much do you know? Have you just found a note of it in some transcript or index, or have you seen the original or a facsimile of it? If the latter then you will know whether it was after the calling of Banns, as was usual, or whether, as in a minority of cases, it was by Licence. If by Licence then you will be able to access the Bond and Allegation needed before the Licence could be issued. They are in Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections, and an index to them, originally compiled about a century ago but re-worked a few years ago by Original Indexes is now among the "Ancestral Indexes" material held by the NDFHS, and available on microfiche. The Durham St Giles baptism may well give the occupation of the father - or an address which makes the occupation possibly guessable (pit village, coal miner: isolated farm, farm worker, etc). You would then know whether or not that fitted with the occupations of the Sedgefield family. Never forget the possibility that family members may have left informative Wills! Geoff Nicholson

Hi, As we have mention of Birkbeck on both Yorkshire and Durham message boards I thought I would respond to both. My lot may not be related but I'm interested in finding out more about a Jonathan Birbeck born around 1857, whose daughter Susan Birkbeck (b 1883 Darlington), married William Edgar Sayer and emigrated to USA (Ellis Island records around 1906). Jonathan was working as a Railway Clerk in Darlington at time of 1881 census and had moved to Sculcoates, Hull by 1901 (The Sayers were a Hull family) The FreeBMD index lists a Jonathan Birbeck born Sept 1857 Crosby Ravensworth, Westmoreland to Joseph and Ann. There are 2 references to the name Joseph Birbeck in Ellis island records between 1904 - 1914, visiting NY area who may also be related? By the way, they had a son George Dennis Sayer (b.1915 Yorkshire - d.1962 Florida.) Susie Sayer's husband Edgar died in Buffalo, New York, in 1922 and Susie remarried in 1924, to one Joseph Betts, a brickie from Crewe who had travelled to USA. Susie died in 1973 in New Jersey, the death being registered under name of Sayer! I would love to know ANYTHING about this family, past or present. Cheers Laurel Sayer

Hello again, I have a question regarding a school in Darlington. My mother was born at 127 Mansfield Street, Darlington in 1907. Looking at a map of the area I see there is / was a school close by in Whessoe Lane. Mum told me that the school she went to was used for soldiers billets during WWI. therefore she left school at a very young age. Does anyone know if this might have been the Whessoe Lane school if so any ideas as to where I might find any records. Thanks for any help Best wishes Pat

In a message dated 09/04/2007 03:43:20 GMT Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I'm looking for the parents of George O. Nixon, married to Mary Watson. He was born in 1781, in Winlaton. Jim: George Oakley Nixon, baptised at Ryton on 3 June 1781, was the son of Cuthbert Nixon (1750-1819) and his wife Joanna Craggs (c1742-1802), who married at Ryton by Licence on 17 June 1769. I have a pedigree which takes the family back for a further four generations and which includes links to the family of Sir W H Stephenson of Throckley, DCL, Chairman of the Throckley Coal Co and three times Lord Mayor of Newcastle. There are also links to the founders of the S Wales steam coal industry and (possibly) to an Agent to Crowley's Factory at Winlaton. There are further links to an extensive and ancient family of Newtons, yeomen famers etc in the Ryton district since Tudor times, some of whom played host to John Wesley when he visited that district on his travels. The details are too many to quote here, and I should mention that the pedigrees to which I refer have been compiled commercially so, if you are interested in them, please contact me off-list.
