Further to Stan's reply, you may be interested to know that there is now a web-site devoted to the passenger lists of the ships that carried emigrants from this country. So far it covers only 1890 to 1919 (or a similar set of years) but it is expanding rapidly. If you have an idea of when he emigrated (and perhaps who went with him, to eliminate any others of the same name) then you may find that the extra details given there (age, etc) are a great help. Stan was right to list some entries that could be yours although they seem at first to be from the wrong time-frame. Ages were very often mis-stated on that, as on many other, occasions. Even when stated correctly, it can be very easy for a transcriber to mis-read two characters from a possibly faded indistinct document. Consider census ages, for instance, where the ages have often been heavily crossed out by clerks more than a century ago. Just one extra practical, though perhaps rather pedantic, point. County Durham is the only English, Welsh or Scottish county to have the word "County" normally used in front of it. All others, whether "Something-shire" (as most are) or such as Somerset, are known just by that single word, or by some standard single-word abbreviation. Indeed this mis-use of the word "county" is one pointer which, apart from the accent, enables British people to tell straight away that someone is from the USA! Geoff Nicholson

    1. [ENG-DURHAM] Information on George William Todd born around 1862-1870 in Bath England
    2. Culp, Kevin
    3. Hi there, My name is Kevin Culp I currently reside in Amherst, New York. I have been doing research on the TODD heritage that immigrated to Canada. I am struggling to find any information on a William George Todd that appears to be accurate. Each source conflicts the other. Two sources suggest he either was born in County Somerset or County Durham. Many sources suggest his parents were Joseph/Emma Todd. He appears to be born around the 1862 to 1870 time frame. It is unclear if he emigrated from England to the US or from England to Canada initially. ________________________________________________________________________ ____ #13809/91 (York Co.) William George Todd, aged 21, b. US, of Detroit, bachelor, teamster, son of Joseph & Emma, married Maggie Armstrong, aged 21, b. US, of Detroit, daughter of James & Sarah Ann; witnesses: Mary J. Hunter & Louise E. Hunter, both of Toronto; 17 January 1891 at Toronto; by W.J. Hunter Addendum Source: I am assuming that he was actually born in England, and not in the US, as per their marriage registration which was likely incorrect. It would seem to me that they were eloping as she was pregnant at the time of the marriage, and they didn't give all the details to the minister who might have assumed they were both born in the US, since they had come from Detroit to Toronto to be married. The family identified by Bill Hartley in the 1880 US Census cannot be the correct one given that in the 1900 US Census, Margarette, b. May 1872, aged 28, single, is still living with the family. I also found the marriage of one of the sons, James Robert Todd, who married Annie Freda Marker in 1920. In that timeframe, they asked the birthplace of the fathers of both the groom and bride. James Robert gives the birthplace of his father as Bath, England. John James Roy Todd also names his father's birthplace as England in his marriage registration to Margaret Eleanor Burns in 1920. ________________________________________________________________________ ____ However I know he had roots in Canada because based on the 1911 census he had the following children which appear to be all born in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. 1911 / Ontario / Hamilton West / 1 Ward 2 / page 13 Todd Geo M Head M Oct 1870 40 Todd Maggie F Wife M May 1871 40 Todd Douglas M Son S Apr 1891 20 Todd Emma F Daughter S Mar 1893 18 Todd Joseph M Son S Nov 1894 16 Todd John M S Oct 1896 14 Todd James M Son S Dec 1898 12 Todd Harold M Son S Nov 1900 11 Todd George M Son S Jul 1901 9 Todd William M Son S Mar 1903 8 Todd Wilfred M Son S Jul 1906 4 Todd Dorothy F Daughter S Mar 1910 1 His death notice appears below: 34002/14 (Wentworth Co.) George Todd, d. 5 March 1914, aged 42 years, 134 Young Street, Hamilton, laborer, married, b. England; informant: Margaret Todd, same address; cause: Brights disease (over 2 years) Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated I have been stale mated here for some time. I cannot proceed until this mystery is answered. Thanking you in advance. Regards, Kevin Culp (Amherst New York USA)

    1. [ENG-DURHAM] Electral rolls
    2. Twohills
    3. Hello Does anyone know if the electoral rolls are on the "open" shelves at Gateshead and Darlington libraries. If yes, would someone be willing to do a look up for me please? Also, in 1906 my gr.grandfather committed suicide in Gateshead - there was an inquest but as yet I have not been able to unearth the report, just wondering if it may have been reported in a newspaper at the time, are newspapers from this time held at the library? Best wishes Pat

    1. Re: [ENG-DURHAM] Electral rolls
    2. >From a useful site; United Kingdom Electoral Registers and their uses Until 1918 electoral registers were compiled by parish overseers or overseers of the poor and the arrangement was at first in alphabetical order of voters, parish by parish. This began to change in 1878 when it was permitted (later required) to merge parliamentary registers with burgess rolls (the registers for municipal elections). The latter were effectively lists of ratepayers and, as rates were then collected door-to-door, their arrangement was in street order and gradually parliamentary registers followed this pattern. http://www.bl.uk/collections/social/spis_er.html Regards Stan Mapstone

The Electoral Rolls are indeed on open shelves in Gateshead Library, but even if they weren't, that in itself would not necessarily prevent anyone using them! I don't know about Darlington. Far more important is to be absolutely certain of the address andn Polling District if it is a modern (c20th century) one that is involved. They are arranged by Ward, then by Polling District, then by Street, (by Street Number, NOT alphabetically). Gateshead Library has a good collection of local newspapers from all periods, as indeed, have most of our major Reference Libraries, each covering their own districts. Some County Record Offices also have newspaper collections. In theory, any newspaper not available locally should be in the British Library's Newspaper collection at Colindale, North London. However, there has been quite a lot of "filling in gaps" by exchanging microfilms with Colindale, and locally-held newspaper collections are all the better for it. Such Coroners' Papers as are available in Durham Record Office are listed, with the names of the deceased and sometimes the verdicts, in its on-line catalogue. Geoff Nicholson

    1. Re: [ENG-DURHAM] Electral rolls
    2. Hi Pat, In the 19th century the lists in the larger towns are arranged by street and house number and after 1918 this became obligatory, the electoral registers being arranged by polling district or ward, and then by street or road. This arrangement is a major drawback for the genealogist and even with a street address a search may take a great deal of time. Regards Stan Mapstone

    1. Re: [ENG-DURHAM] HELP NEEDED TO FIND CEMETERY
    2. Ann, My User Guide No1 from the Durham County Record Office tells me that Teesdale Registration District created in July 1837, contained/covered 21 parishes (Church of England) and assuming that each had a church and a graveyard and there also existed graveyards of other religious denominations..... that's a lot of cemeteries to cover. But you can reduce the size of the task by focussing on the specific place they died ( e.g. clues from their residences from census records) rather than the "District" in which their deaths were registered. The Co Durham section of the GenUKI web site, shows the towns, villages etc that lay in the Teesdale District juridiction. Auckland Reg District covered 20 parishes Michael Dixon

    1. [ENG-DURHAM] READHEAD family connection to Richardson
    2. J K gen
    3. I'm helping a friend with her family history: tale says her own line Richardsons are/were related to the Re(a)dhead shipbuilding family. I've found the first John Readhead's wife was called Susannah Richardson, but does anyone know anything about this lady? Apparently born about 1819 in Whitby, Yorkshire, married John Readhead 20 Nov 1842 at St Hilday, South Shields. However, I must say this Richardson connection seems a bit far distant for a family story of a possible Lord Mayor in the family related to the Richardson line - especially when the Lord Mayor is supposed to be an uncle. The census returns I've found for the Readhead don't appear to have any other Richardson relatives staying with them on the nights in question. So no clues. Does anyone have any further information? The main source of my Readhead shipbuilding data is the website, through Communigate/Northumbria University, run by ex-worker/s of the company. JK

    3. There is the marriage of a James WESTGARTH in Newcastle in the September Quarter of 1877 to Janet McDougall. The marriage took place at Jesmond Clayton Memorial. However there seem to be 2 James Westgarth's of the same age [possibly the same person enumerated twice???] - one on board the Blue Billy vessel out of Berwick and the other at home with his wife and child.
