As a newcomer to the Durham List, I am seeking help or advice from anyone who might have knowledge of Badles Farm, Blackwell or the Reid family. It was farmed in 1881 by Alfred Reid/Reed and family, however I believe that only 4 years later the family migrated to South Australia. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you, Sandra.
Hello All Does anybody have a link to John Green and Elizabeth Garnick who lived in Hylton St Sunderland in the 1920's and also the Robson's of Ogden St Millfield, Douglas amd Mary Robson nee Hewison lived there also in the 1920's. Regards Allan Robson
Hello All I wonder if someone can help in breaking down a brickwall. I am looking for the Birth/Baptism of John Robson son born 1838/40 of John Robson a Joiner by trade. John Robson married Eleanor Ann Hall in Sunderland 15th Jan 1860 he gave his age as 22 and Fathers Name & Profession was John Robson a Joiner. On the 1861 Census details as follows John Robson age 23 Seaman in Merchant Service born Bishopwearmouth Eleanor wife age 27 Born Sunderland Douglas son age 4 monrhs born Bishopwearmouth. I Have checked the Sunderland Registrations and the only one I found Registered was a John Robson born April 1838 but his father was John Robson a Bottlemaker which is a Trade in itself. What complicates things id that My John Robson died in May 1865 as a Result of an Accident on the Hartlepool to Sunderland Railway he was on his way to to the training ship in Sunderland when the Accident occured. His age at Death was given as 26, however the parish Records said he was 25, this makes me think John lied about his age when he married and may have been born as late as 1840, the family were living in Hartlepool when John died, by 1865 he had a further 2 children Eleanor Jane born 1963 died 1872 in Sunderland Thomas Foster born April 1865 died 1874 in Sunderland, This child was renamed John a month after his father had died. Unless I can find a Birth Reg or Baptism for John I cant find out who is mother is, I have checked all the Durham and Northumberland John Robson Registrations born Sept 1837 to Dec 1841 and he is not there, also no sign of a Baptism in Sunderland or Surrounding area's. May be someone can help on this, I know John Robson is a common name in the North East but I cant believe there is no evidence of him. Regards Allan Robson

Hi - could anyone with access to ancestry dot co dot uk possibly check the 1851 census for Samuel Walker age 49 born abt 1802 in Darby Hampsthouse Yorks/ wife Rachel born Cockfield, - and decipher occupations of Samuel and son Robert? In the 1861 census Samuel's occupation is "Fundholder". (I'm not sure what that could be and cannot make it out in the 1851 census). Many thanks - Austin

The British Government financed its National Debt by issuing bonds on the money markets. Once you had bought a bond (i.e. loaned the Government some money) the Government would pay you a guaranteed fixed rate of interest. This was a very safe form of investment and people did this especially to guarantee an income in later life, I can't make out the 1851 occupation, it looks like 'general ?????' Regards Stan Mapstone

Hi Lindsay, You wrote: > I was put in touch with Mary Ethel Best's brother's widow who lived somewhere in Cheshire or North Wales < What was the name of Mary Ethel Best's brother? Did his widow give you an idea of his age? It might be possible to find his birth registration on Ancestry BMDs. Kind regards, Yvonne
Good heavens, what a fantastic find, thank you Soooooo much...it's the first potential ID of Ethel's father...let's hope it's the right one this time!! If it is, then Ethel's father, at least, DID attend her wedding, and the information on the marriage certificate is not fabricated! Oh well house work is out the window today, I'll be doing some research..!!! Lindsay
Well she told me his name was Jim....but, surprise, surprise, I can't find a birth entry for him.... Lindsay
Hi, have been searching for the date of birth and his parents, of Christopher Brotherton who married Mary Brown on the 8th. June 1817 at Hauten le Skern. Witness' were a John Brotherton, Mary Brotherton, John Perloff and Anne Bainbridge. They had two sons, Francis Christened 25th. April, 1819 at Wensley Yorkshire and Thomas Mason Christened 13th. May 1821 at Wensley, Yorkshire. There is a Christopher Brotherton in census up till 1861 - but he was married to a Jane and have not been able to find a date of death for Mary Brotherton which would have had to have been before 1821 when this Christopher married Jane. Any help gratefully welcomed. Thank you, Joyce Harnby nee Brotherton, email [email protected]

It therefore looks as though Mary died in Yorkshire, where her children had been born. Perhaps someone on one of the Yorkshire Lists can help you there. Geoff Nicholson
I posted this on the list some while ago...it suddenly occurred to me that if I could find the birth of Ella Maureen Sanderson Best (the informant, who describes herself as "sister" on Ethel's death cert) then I would have the mother's maiden name....however I cannot find the birth of Ella Please help! Lindsay South Wales OK, this is what I know about my husband's Best connections: Mary Best (my husband's bio mother) was born 5th June 1942 at 7 Long Lane, Littlemore, Oxford (District of Ploughley, ref 3a 2990) The mother was unmarried, and was named on the original birth certificate as Mary Ethel Best. I have seen the original birth certificate and the baby Mary Best's subsequent adoption papers. One evening a long time ago now, probably some time in about 1988 my husband Jim (we were not married then but lived nextdoor to each other in an Oxfordshire village) decided to see if we could find the address where the baby was born, and we found it with ease, but it was unoccupied. However a neighbour came out and asked us what we were doing and we explained that we were looking for the Best family who once lived there. We were given the address of a Miss Best who lived just around the corner, and I wrote her a letter, and she subsequently phoned me... To cut a long story short I was put in touch with Mary Ethel Best's brother's widow who lived somewhere in Cheshire or North Wales and she gave me quite a lot of detail; she told us that she was present at the baby's birth (as the house belonged to her!) and Mary Ethel had subsequently married someone called "Collins" and had died in 1985, so I sent for her death certificate, only to find that she was Ethel Mary Collins, and not Mary Ethel. I simply assumed from this that she probably had swapped the names around on the birth certificate to prevent detection at some later date. Jim's mother disapproved of his relationship with me as I was a single parent and older than he is...and then I discovered that Jim was illegitimate too, (his mother had told him that she was a widow). Believe me, I was not proud of making this discovery (Jim had never seen his full birth certificate and I obtained it..!) and as a consequence she never spoke to me again. Jim was terribly upset by all of this so I felt quite disinclined to continue researching at that time. We moved right away from Oxfordshire, got married here in Wales, and concentrated on bringing up our family - and a grand-daughter now! Recently my own family tree has started to take off again and I decided to have another crack at Jim's. I've just found the marriage of Ethel Mary Best to Thomas Hertbert Collins, (In Buckinghamshire, which I knew about, and where Ethel died) which states Ethel's father as James Herbert Best, and he is also one of the witnesses to the marriage. Ethel's age is given as 29 which makes her born in 1917 if she has given the right age, which is now doubtful - but I can't imagine her father being party to a deception as far as he was concerned there would be no reason for it because he was unaware of Ethel having had a baby...of course, as the marriage took place in Buckinghamshire and not in the North East which is where we knew they came from, anyone could have masqueraded as the father...the possibilities are endless aren't they? Next I tried to find Ethel Mary's birth, which is stated by the informant on her death certificate as 19th November 1916 in Cockfield, Bishop Auckland. I sent for a copy of the certificate, giving that information and the father's name as given on the marriage cert but the GRO could not find it in 1915, 1916, or 1917. The informant on the death cert is Ella Maureen Sanderson Best, described as sister (the relation in Cheshire confirmed to me in our phone conversation in the 80s that there was a sister called Ella). Now I can't find a birth for Ella, either, although I have found an Eleanor, with parents James Best and Ethel Summers, who also had a daughter Ethel born in 1916 (info from Ancestry.com) so either it's the wrong birth or the wrong father's details on the marriage certificate? A birth has also been found for a Mary Best, mother's maiden surname Winter, Dec qr 1916 in Auckland...but I have no way of knowing who I am looking for? If the Winter one is correct then this would be truly ironic, as my family here in Wales, is Winter..... Can anyone help me try to unravel this mystery that has been bugging me for 20 years? Lindsay
Can someone please find me a birth entry for Ella Maureen Sanderson BEST probably in the Bishop Auckland area, and probably during the years of World War 1. In particular I would like to know the maiden name of the mother Any help greatly appreciated. Lindsay South Wales
