It might be productive for you to check on the earliest dates from which parish registers run. Once you are back in the 17th century there are many gaps in what is available - the registers have not all survived. Since the BTs also do not survive from that far back, it could be that you are at a real briack wall. Possibly useful non-parish register sources for earlier periods include: Wills, Hearth Tax Returns, Protestation Returns Records of the County Committee for Compounding with Delinquent Royalists Deeds Halmote Court Records None of these are "easy" or necessarily straightforward. Some are in Durham County Record Office, some in The National Archives, some in Durham University Library and some have been published many years ago by the Surtees Society. You have reached the point where the research, if not the results of that research, gets interesting. Good hunting! Geoff Nicholson

There are a number of sheets missing from Ancestry.com in District 4F of Houghton-le-Spring in the 1861 census. This section goes to 47 pages but there are actually 56 pages in all. One of the missing pages is the following, Piece 3752, Fol 86 Page 38 and contains the following families:- William ROBINSON William THOMPSON, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Wanless, Jane Robert MASON, Mary, Catherine, Jane A William HAY, Ann Joseph LIDDLE, Barbara James HUDSPETH Francis MITCHIESON (?), Elizabeth, Mary J, Perry, Appeline Joseph DIXON, Elizabeth Thomas HEALY, Maria, Joseph . . . . Try Durham Records Online if you think your family might be on one of the nine missing pages-) Cheers Linda P.S. Have notified Ancestry.com.
hi to all, i am looking for any info on JANE RAMSEY and family.she was born in south shields durham in abt 1819. unfortunately this is the only info i have.so would be grateful for any help or suggestions. thanks lynne casselman
To add to Geoff's post, I have a census record for one of my people who is called William J in one census and John William in the next! It is the same person both times. They lived in Hetton as well so maybe it was a common thing to change your kids names around between the census! The only Jane Ramsey baptism around 1819 I found in South Shields St Hilda was a Jane Sarah Ramsey/Ramsay baptised 15 Mar 1818 daughter of Patrick and Sarah Ramsey. Janis

Hi Dave I've checked the Durham Records and only one of theWilliam Dixons is currently on line. His birth is registered in the Durham Northern area. This is the contact details: Durham Northern The Registrar 7 Thorneyholme Terrace Stanley Co Durham DH9 0BJ UK Telephone: 01207 235849 (In UK), +44 1207 235849 (Outside UK) The specific reference number for the certificate is DNCH2-61 Durham Northern (1840). You may be lucky, if you call and ask the if they would confirm the parents are Joseph and Mary Dixon, so that you can see if it's your man. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won't. You just need to hope they are not too busy. Personally I would wait until, say Tuesday or Wednesday, which tend to be quieter with fewer weddings etc going on. Hello All If anybody comes across the following while researching would they please let me know. John Robson born 1840 probably at Hetton-Le Hole his parents appear to be John Robson and Eleanor Urwin, John's birth is not Registered I have had all the Robson's checked and all christian names looked at but no luck, there is also no sign of a Baptism in the Hetton area although the family were living there till 1847. there was a Margaret Robson born 1841 at Hetton she is Registered but no Baptism, also Armstrong Robson born 1843 baptised 1846 at St Nicholas Hetton along with his brother Richard born 1846 died 1846, both Armstrong and Richards births are Registered at Hetton, it seems odd my Line of John Robson is neither Registered or Baptised Regards Allan Robson
I would like to buy a Birth Registration Certificate for William DIXON born in County Durham in 1840. I see four possibilities in FreeBMD but I do not know which District, Vol., or Page will match the one I want as requested in the application form for the GRO. However I do know that his parents were Joseph and Mary DIXON. Is there a way to specify only the information I know to order the correct one? Thank you. Dave.
At the bottom of the form under reference checking you can state the parent information and you will only be charged about 2 or 3 GBP. I believe it says the price on the form. But have you found William Dixon in later censuses? If you know the parish of birth, you can figure out the correct registration district. You might also be able to eliminate some of them if they are listed in the IGI. Paula On Jul 26, 2007, at 12:54 PM, David W. Hi list! Im looking for a WILLIAM CARRICK on the 1871 and 1861 census. He was born around 1850 in Stanley, Lanchester, DURHAM. He married MARY JANE ELLWOOD, from the Shotton Colliery area, in 1878 in Easington. Known children to the couple are: (info from 1881 and 1891 census and FreeBMD) Mary Ann b) 1879 John b) 1881 Janet b) 1884 Isaac b) 1886 Martha b) 1890 Thankyou for ANY help at all with this CARRICK line! Kind Regards Emma Beevers
Paver's Marriage Index of Yorkshire listed the following: 1599 Thomas Day of Bishopton and Frances Clough of Topcliffe. The first of my Day family of Bishopton that I have (due mostly to the kind help of the Durham list) is William Day and Margaret Curton/Kirton m. 1 April 1799 and had a Thomas b. 21 Dec. 1799, bapt. 2 Feb 1800 I also have all the information from the 1800's. Did this first Thomas bring his bride back to Bishopton? Are there records going back that far (1600's and 1700's) for b.m.d's? Nancy Vogt
