    3. Geoff - many thanks for the maiden name of Jane Ware and the children. You did not advise your source, but is the spelling clear of Softley? I can't see the 'e' in latter documents. Helen - I very much like the virtual tour of Barnard Castle - much more fun than Google Earth. I had spotted "Ware St" - does anybody know when the street was named? The Ware family became 'famous' for their horticulture with Thomas Softly WARE and his sons (say 1860 onwards). Did the town name the street recently? Also many thanks for the link to Cleveland FHS. I am sure the WARE family was not an RC family then, but is there a clear distinction on the use of St Mary's and Victoria Road Cemeteries, eg latter only open in xxxx? Thanks to you both... 3. Any suggestions please: I have 1891 Census John Ashmore aged 22, Coalminer born South Church, Durham. Annie aged 19, wife, born Coxhoe, Durham. 1901 Census I have the same information only aged ten years older and with four children, one of these was Ethel A. ASHMOOR married to George WILSON in 1911 at Sedgefield. I have information of descendants of Ethel and George WILSON who migrated to Australia. What I cannot find is a marriage of John Ashmore to Annie ?. or The birth of John Ashmore in South Church Durham. I was told his parents were John Ashmore and Sarah Jane Briggs but nowhere can I find any marriage or information. If anyone can suggest how I may find more information, I would appreciate it very much. Cheers Pam [email protected] No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 2. Pam, A candidate for your missing marriage ? Dec Quarter, 1890, registered with Stockton RO. John Ashmoore >< Annie Stewart Source. FreeBMD site (Shows four spouses, John Goundry on C1891 has a wife called Dorothy A, hence John married Annie ! ). C1881 4903-81-43 shows Ann Stewart born Coxhoe, with parents John/Isabella. This was fairly straightfoward, so have you already rejected this ? Michael Dixon Newcastle

    3. Does anybody on this list have an interest in Thomas Softly/Softby WARE who died 30 May 1901 in 16 Montalbo Terrace, Barnard Castle? He was born in about 1826 also in Barnard Castle, but spent most of the intervening years in Tottenham grown plants - he is my G^2 grandfather. His father was George WARE and ironmonger "born in the same county" according to the 1841 census. I would love to find for details of these two: their graves, birth details etc, though living in Oman at the moment does make trips to Co Durham difficult! Does anybody recognise the middle name as Softby or Softly? Many thanks Richard

    2. Rose Kelland
    3. Hi there, I used to subscribe to this list for a while, but have come back with more information and wondering if anyone can add to this for me. DORIS DAVIES was a 23 year old when she married on 9th January 1945 in Durham South Eastern district, County Durham. The marriage was witnessed by ELI DAVIES and LAURA DAVIES who were her parents (or at least Eli was her father). Eli was a coal miner. At the time she was a munition Factory Worker and lived at 16 West Chiltern, Chiltern Buildings Ferry Hill. She married PHILIP EDMOND FRANCIS KELLAND who was only in UK temporarily being in the Royal Navy (Leading Stoker) and originally from South Africa. According to immigration records, she returned with him to South Africa on board the HMS Nigeria in June 1950. What happened to her after that, I don't know! Either she died or he divorced her, however, I have no records of this divorce. He remarried in December 1952. Can anyone claim this Doris Davies? or know if she returned to England? This is a mystery I haven't yet solved and would dearly like to know what happened to my father-in-laws second wife!!! 2. In a message dated 02/09/2007 04:44:01 GMT Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Can someone tell me if Raby is in Durham. Does Ralph 4th Lord Neville 1st Earl of Westmoreland still have descendants there. Le Briefly, Yes, and No. Raby is part of Co Durham, both before and after he 1974 boundary changes. Raby itself is really just Raby Castle, just outside Staindrop, in whose parish it is. The Neville family, which had owned Raby (and another massive Co Durham Castle at Brancepeth) for centuries, lost it after their participation in the Rising of the Northern Earls (the Earl of Westmorland and the Earl of Northumberland) in 1569. That had been a Roman-Catholic inspired attempt to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I and put Mary, Queen of Scots, on the Throne of England. Eventually the Crown granted Raby to a branch of the widespread Co Durham Vane family and it still belongs to them, the present head of that branch having the title of Lord Barnard. Raby Castle is still the home of Lord Barnard and still stands in its full mediaeval magnificence, complete with deer-park (and deer), moat and all other accoutrements of a mediaeval strong-point. It is open to the public - I was there earlier this summer - and it is thrilling to go into the large room, later used as a library, where the guide assures one that it was there that the 1569 Rising was plotted. If you believe that the Nevilles rank amongst your own ancestors, I would urge you to read up about them in almost any serious book on the history of England at the time. Please do not simply accept the hilariously useless "information" given on eg the IGI, which solemnly assures us the "Lord Neville" married "Lady Neville" at "Raby" in some year during the 14th century. While that may well be true, and anyone can guess that it is, it hardly tells us anything about the people concerned! The origin of the Neville family is a fascinating one, and it seems likely that they have a direct male-line descent from Crinan of Dunkeld, an 11th century Scotsman who was Lay-Abbott of Dunkeld Abbey and who was so well placed within the Scottish Royal family that he would have had a good claim to the Throne if he had not been technically, an Abbot. They share that descent with the Kings of Scotland (up to Alexander III), the Earls of Dunbar, and probably also the Washingtons of Washington (and hence with the rebel who became the first president of the USA), as well as, it is claimed, the Metcalfes of Nappa in Wensleydale and a few other short-lived Northumberland families, their relationship to each other having been masked initially by the lack of hereditary surnames and then by different branches adopting different surnames. I call them all "Crinanites". Crinan himself would have said that he was "of the kin of St Columba", as the Scottish Royal family always claimed. If true then the male line probably goes back to the local "Kings" of the Irish tribe which became the Scots. There is only one way to truly appreciate Raby Castle, and that is to visit it personally. Geoff Nicholson
