My g-grandfather, Thomas COLLING was born in Houghton in 1815. He married Mary WILSON (father STEPHEN) in Bishopwearmouth Church in 1840. Their place of abode on the marriage certificate was NEW TOWN. Would this be part of Sunderland or the beginnings of Washington New Town? In 1841, they were living in Houghton. The occupation of this same Thomas COLLING was listed in the 1851 census as coal miner and school master. I am presuming that this possibly meant teaching in a Sunday School. Any ideas on where to find details of such 'school masters'? Margaret.
