Hi Allan, Until 1867 Electoral Registers only included male owners and tenants of larger properties as a property qualification was needed in order to vote. The land had to be worth at least £10 a year, provided that they had been in occupation for at least 12 months, paid poor rate and assessed taxes, and lived within seven miles of the borough. In 1861 census, the total population of Sunderland Parliamentary Borough was 82,474, but the electorate in 1859 was only 2,729, so unless John Robson came into the above category, he will not appear, and his wife certainly won't.
