The entry in the book "Buildings and Beliefs by Tom Corfe and Geoffrey Milburn, published by Wearside Historic Churches Group in 1984, reads: "1891, by W L Newcombe. The most striking Gothic church north of the river, its tall slender spire surmounted by a weathercock. Decorated nave. Originally Free Church of Scotland, replacing a plain Classical building of 1827." Alan Vickers.
