    3. As always, Stan, you are a mine of information! I hadn't realised that Sunderland had been such an important port- being a Stockton girl myself. All those immigrant groups you mentioned have appeared in my census district with the exception of the Italian icecream vendor. I will add a couple of Englishmen (born in Co. Durham) who were 'French interpreters' and one Thomas Smith who was born in a French prison. There was obviously a huge Irish presence in the area just a step back from the wharfs - I must have checked literally hundreds of them. I can recommend the Freecens project for anyone who wants to learn about the social history of an area. Reading the census gives an overall view of the population, their origins and their work which you don't get just by checking your family. Thanks again Janice Toowoomba
