There are none in the 1894 Directory, and only one in the 1902 Directory, a Mrs. Teresa Salesa, at 3 1/2 High Street. Between 1908 and 1910 the Ciarella family moved to Sunderland from Scotland, and the Valente family were also in business, a Mrs. Congetter Valente was at 3 1/2 High Street in 1914. Of course later was Notarianni's in High Street. Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org

    3. As well as Notarianni's in High St West, there was Pompa's in High St East where my mother Patsy worked for many years until it burnt down in the Joplings store fire in the mid-fifties.The Fella's had a shop at the bottom of Silksworth Row Bank and the Maggiore family had Louis' in Crowtree Road. I also remember Tony Puggi (or Pucci) who had an icecream cart - the forerunner of the icecream van!
