And I'll bet that just mentioning them has brought back a whole pile of memories! In Stockton, the only Italian icecream parlour was Pacitto's where my cousin and I were taken for a treat every Saturday morning. I suspect that the first long words I could read were 'Knockerbocker Glory' - and I have NEVER had one! But to have an icecream in a dish - not a cone - was a luxury anyway! I did a search of Italian-born people in the Northern Borders region of the 1881 census. There were 356 entries, many of whom were sailors on ships in the ports. The most popular occupations seemed to be either ice-cream vendors or street musicians. Indeed some of the 356 were bandsmen on board Royal Navy ships! Somebody should write a book! Janice Toowoomba
