Two hundred years ago in 1801; it contained 29,704 people which rose to 81,246 in 1851 and 261,924 in 1911. Today, 15.59% of the population is over 65 and 25.47% under 20, but in 1851 these percentages were 4.05% and 46.50%. Today, the service industry is the largest sector of the local economy, employing 69.23% workers, while in 1841 25.64% worked in manufacturing. In 1931 Male unemployment was 29.2%, 22.7% in 1991 and 10.4% in 2001 Today, 49% of women work outside the home, or want to, but in 1931 only 23.8% did. In 1931, 8.5% of male workers had middle class jobs -- now 36.2% do. In 1951, 24.06% of households lacked their own toilet. By 2001 this had dropped to under 0.23%. 97.22% of households had central heating, a bath/shower and a toilet. Roughly 53.7% of children aged 5 to 14 went to school in 1851 (52.6% nationally). Today, 69% of 16 and 17 year olds stay on at school (76.9% nationally). Today, 9.6% of people claim no religion, 81.48% describe themselves as Christian.
