It appears that the name of the church is St. Thomas, Bishopwearmouth. Is there a church by this name, and if so, how close to Sunderland was it. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> St Thomas' was in John Street in the town centre and was destroyed during WW2 by an enemy mine on the 14th March 1943. The vicar at the time, the Rev. Leyland Orton was killed while on duty as a fire watcher. St Thomas' was built as a Chapel-of-Ease to Bishopwearmouth Church 1827-29, and the parish was formed in 1856. My parents were married there. Regards Stan Mapstone www.mapstone.org
