At the St Peter's Vestry Meeting held in 1854 the Chairman informed the members that Dr. Sutherland, a goverment inspector , had informed the authorities that the churchyard would be closed for burials at the expiration of a twelve month. This was presumably because the new cemetery at Mere Knolls was being opened.
