It looks as though he joined the tramways in 1915 because of the shortage of men. The war caused a great drain on the manpower employed on the tramways. By 1917 no less than 152 men were in the forces and eventually all the 85 conductors were female, and the whole of the cleaning staff had been replaced by men exempt from military service.
