In the 1851 Census William Brown describes himself as Superintendent of Police. In the 1861 and 1871 census Joseph Stainsby describes himself as Chief Constable Borough Police. So it seems that from at least Joseph Stainsby the chief officer was calling himself Chief Constable. Stan
