    3. In the 1858 Directory there were two schools at 99 Hendon Road a Wesleyan School, and a British and Foreign School, but these were not on the site of the Corporation Public Baths and Wash Houses which were on the other side of Smyrna Place, and were still there in 1914. The school you are referring to was the British and Foreign Society School, which after a number of years in sites on Garden Street and Nicholson Street, or as it was sometimes called Coxon's Fields, moved to a permanent site on the corner of Norfolk Street and Borough Road in 1856 (the 1858 directory is out of date) next to the Quaker Meeting House. British Schools were founded in 1808 by Joseph Lancaster, a Quaker in 1808. Stan Mapstone On 20 March 2010 14:25, Stan Mapstone <stanmapstone@googlemail.com> wrote: > Hi Rob, > When in the 1800s?
