Hi everyone I have a John Phillips died 1871 but the cert just says Workhouse The family lived in Collier Row and I know Sunderland Union Workhouse was very close -was it also a hospital or infirmary ? Cheers Pat & Derek
Sunderland Union Workhouse was on Hylton Road, and there was also a hospital on the site. It was called the Highfield Hospital, although the building remained predominantly a Poor Law Institution a small number of beds were set aside for the sick and mentally ill. Sunderland Union Hospital was administered by the Board of Guardians until 1929, when after the Board were abolished the Borough separated the Municipal Hospital from the Highfield Institution. The Local Health Committee became responsible for the Hospital. By 1930, the workhouse site had become known as the Highfield Institute and Municipal Hospital. Under the National Health Service, the hospital became Sunderland General Hospital. now the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
