    3. The Sunderland Poor Law Union formally came into existence on 13thDecember 1836. Initially, the new Sunderland Union made use of theexisting Bishopwearmouth Harley Street workhouse (Where the High StreetBaths were later built). The new workhouse on Hylton Road was built1853-5.
