    3. Danish (Viking) incursions on the Northumbria coast began towards the end of the 8th century, and continued, at intervals, for over 200 years. The monastic buildings of Monkwearmouth continued in use until the mid-9th century, when they were either destroyed by Viking invaders, or abandoned by the monks because of the threat from the Vikings. As for place names, Old Scandinavian, whether Danish or Norwegian, is a Germanic language, as is Old English. This means that while it is usually possible to distinguish Celtic and Old English elements in place names, it is not always possible to distinguish Old Scandinavian and Old English elements from each other.
