    3. In 1891 the balance of the Victoria Hall Disaster Fund, amounting to £4,000, was, with other funds obtained by subscription, handed to the trustees of the infirmary, to purchase a house at Harrogate, which was altered and enlarged to form a convalescent home in connection with the infirmary. The Victoria Hall was bought by the Corporation in 1903, which spent £30,000 on modernisation, and it was reopened on 7th November 1906. 2010/1/12 ROB SHEPHERD <robshepherd1974@googlemail.com> > Can anyone tell me more about the Victoria Hall disaster fund and the > committee overseeing this? > > Also, the Victoria Hall was enlarged I believe sometime after 1900, could > anyone tell me when this was? > > When was the fund finally closed? > > Many thanks > > Rob > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > ENG-DUR-SUNDERLAND-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Hi Stan, Many thanks for your previous replies. I now think that West House, Diamond Hall must have been one of the two houses that you mentioned. As you say by 1895 either Diamond Hall was demolished and two houses built or it had been converted into two houses - I think probably the latter. Thanks also for the link. It is a very interesting article and mentions a lot of maps I have never heard about before. Just wished I lived nearer..... Mark Etheridge. 3. I can offer only a crumb of info on the name the Embleton. My g-g-aunt, Thomasina Dodd (b. 1806, Sunderland area) married William Embleton in 1840. William is believed to have had two brothers: John (1800-1866) and Jacob (d. 1866). The marriage is reported in www.sunderland.gov.uk/pages/registrars. I can offer no citation on the rest. That's 100% of what I think I know. So far. I hope it helps. Bruce Dodd Ottawa

    3. The Sunderland Poor Law Union formally came into existence on 13thDecember 1836. Initially, the new Sunderland Union made use of theexisting Bishopwearmouth Harley Street workhouse (Where the High StreetBaths were later built). The new workhouse on Hylton Road was built1853-5. 3. Sunderland Union Workhouse was on Hylton Road, and there was also a hospital on the site. It was called the Highfield Hospital, although the building remained predominantly a Poor Law Institution a small number of beds were set aside for the sick and mentally ill. Sunderland Union Hospital was administered by the Board of Guardians until 1929, when after the Board were abolished the Borough separated the Municipal Hospital from the Highfield Institution. The Local Health Committee became responsible for the Hospital. By 1930, the workhouse site had become known as the Highfield Institute and Municipal Hospital. Under the National Health Service, the hospital became Sunderland General Hospital. now the Sunderland Royal Hospital. George Conlan SCOTT, son, aged 11, at school, born Sunderland Durham Another interesting fact for you, on this census if you were married you had to fill in how long you had been married, how many children were born alive to this marriage, how many were still living and how many had died. As George was a widower he did not have to fill in this part, but he did, and gave the following information - Completed years in present marriage, 12. Total children born alive, 2. Children still living, 1. Children who have died, 1.
